Choctaws Conclude 2017 Season

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team fell 9-6 to West Florida in the first postseason meeting between the two schools at the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
 
KEY STATS
  • Hunter Wilson extended his hit streak to 26 games as he led off the contest with a single. It also marks his 29th straight game reaching base.
  • Kyle Smith, Austin Hunter and Casey Echols each totaled multiple hit efforts in the game.  The trio each recorded a pair of hits in the finale.
  • Hunter Lacefield (4-4) took the loss on the bump as he pitched 2.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After West Florida struck first with a run in their first trip to the plate, the Choctaws returned the favor with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Blaine Crim drove in the first run on a bases loaded, fielder's choice and the Navy and Gold added its second run as Smith stole home.
  • Matt Sullivan knotted the contest at 2-all with a lead-off home run in the second inning.
  • After Ladeavon Matthews broke the deadlock with a RBI single, Justin Ambrosino followed a batter later with a three-run home run to place West Florida up 6-2.
  • MC cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth as Echols doubled down the left field line to push Hunter Sykes across the dish, however, the Choctaws left the bags full to conclude the frame.
  • West Florida added two runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 8-3.
  • After Wilson scored on a ground out, Grant Barber delivered a two-run, triple to cut the deficit to 8-6.
  • The Argos added an insurance run in the ninth.
 
Mississippi College concludes the 2017 season with a 20-28 record.
