Choctaws' Rally Falls Short; MC Out-Hits Lions in Setback

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team's rally fall short as the Choctaws fall 3-2 to North Alabama. MC moves to 20-27 on the season while the Lions improve to 34-18.
 
KEY STATS
  • Mississippi College out-hit the Lions in the contest 12-7. It marks just the fifth time this season that the Choctaws have fallen after out-hitting its opponent. MC is 17-5 in contests when it has had more hits than its opponent.
  • Hunter Wilson extended his hit streak to 25 straight games as the junior tied Hunter Sykes with most hits in the game as the duo combined for six of the 12 hits on the day with three each.
  • Will Elliott added a pair of hits to join Wilson and Sykes with multiple hits in the affair.
  • Zack Ingram (4-5) was saddled with the loss on the mound. The freshman struck out three and walked three with seven hits allowed in his third complete game performance of the season.
  • The Choctaw lead-off hitters were 5-for-9 on the day at the plate as the squad hit .316 for the day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • North Alabama plated a run in the first, fourth and seventh frames to hold a 3-0 lead through 8.5 innings of play.
  • Ingram and the MC defense limited the Lions in their final two trips to plate as the Purple and Gold was retired in order.
  • Elliott and Sykes started off the bottom of the ninth with a pair of infield singles setting the stage for a rally.
  • MC got on the board in the bottom of the ninth as Wilson drove in Elliott after he and Sykes stole a base each.
  • Sykes became the second MC run of the frame as he stole third and scored on the fourth, UNA throwing error of the game. Wilson moved from first to third on a stolen and the throwing miscue.
  • A pair of pop ups end the Choctaws' threat in the frame leaving the tying run 90 feet away.

  • Mississippi College returns to action on Monday, May 8 at 8:30 p.m. as it faces West Florida in the final day of the GSC Tournament.
