Choctaws Rally to Take Series Finale Against North Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team took the series finale against the University of North Alabama with a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Frierson Field inside Dickins-Scoper Stadium. MC moves to 15-20 overall and 11-12 in the Gulf South Conference. The Lions fall to 23-15 and 15-9 in league play.
 
KEY STATS
  • A pair of Choctaws posted multiple hits in the win. Blaine Crim went 2-for-3 with 2-RBI and a run scored while Hunter Wilson went 2-for-5 with a run.
  • Tommy Taborda (2-2) notched his second win of the season with two-thirds of an inning relief. The sophomore allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout.
  • Jake Fraze (1) claimed his first save of the season. The junior tossed the final inning of play and held the Lions off the base paths.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 5-2 after the top of the eighth, MC rallied back for five runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Crim brought the Choctaws to within a run as he lifted his fifth home run of the season over the left center wall to score Chance Whitten, who led the inning off with a double.
  • After a pair of walks and a Lion error loaded the bases with one away, Wilson reached on a fielder's choice that scored Grant Barber. A UNA miscue allowed Wilson to advance to second and Will Elliott to score and place MC up 6-5.
  • Another Lion error – the third of the inning – allowed Wilson to score and cap the inning for MC with a two-run lead.
  • The Choctaws struck first in the contest with two runs in the bottom of the first. Kyle Smith scored a on a Whitten sacrifice fly for the first run of the game and a batter later, Casey Echols scored on a Hunter Austin single to give MC the early lead.
  • The Navy and Gold maintained the advantage through seven innings as starter Zack Ingram allowed just two hits and retired 16 straight during the stretch.
  • UNA posted a five-run, top of the eighth to take its first lead of the day. The Lions logged back-to-back singles to open the inning and following a sac bunt, Chris Blakey hit a two-run double to knot the contest at 2-all.
  • A batter later, T.J. Lockett hit a three-run home run to place the Purple and Gold in front 5-2.
 
NEXT UP
  • Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 11 as it travels to Arkadelphia, Ark., to face Henderson State. The non-conference doubleheader is slated for two, seven-inning contests with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
