Choctaws Upset No. 8 Southern Arkansas in Extra Innings

MC runs win streak to nine games.

CLINTON, Miss. --- Hunter Sykes delivered a walk-off, RBI single as the Mississippi College baseball team upset No. 8 Southern Arkansas, 4-3, in 12 innings. The win moves the Choctaws win streak to nine games and it gives the program its first win over the Muleriders in program history.
 
KEY STATS
  • The walk-off single was the only hit of the day for Sykes and the second time he reached base as he added a walk.
  • A pair of Choctaws notched multiple hits in the outing led by Casey Echols 3-for-6 day at the plate along with two RBI. Kyle Smith added a 2-for-5 afternoon with a run scored while Hunter Wilson also tabulated a 2-for-5 effort with a run scored.
  • Tim Holloway (2-3) recorded his second win of the season with 5.0 innings in relief. Holloway fanned three and walked three along with two hits and a run surrendered.
 HOW IT HAPPENS
  • MC used a walk, fielder's choice and hit by pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the 12th to set up the heroics for Sykes. Chance Whitten drew a lead-off walk. Hunter Austin reached on a fielder's choice, which left Whitten safe at second, followed by Grant Barber taking first on a hit by pitch.
  • The Choctaws tied the game in the bottom of the ninth at 3-all as Echols drove in his second run of the game with a single that scored Smith.
  • SAU scored in its first trip to the plate on a Jacob Richardson, RBI double, but the Navy and Gold rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Echols posted his first RBI with a single that plated Wilson, who singled to start the frame. Will Elliott scored on the following play to give MC the lead.
  • The Muleriders responded in the top of the eighth as Richardson scored on a passed ball after doubling to lead-off the inning.
NEXT UP
  • Mississippi College returns to action this weekend as it hosts North Alabama. The three-game series opens on Saturday, Apr. 8 with a doubleheader slated for 2 p.m. The finale is slotted for Sunday, Apr. 9 at 1 p.m.
