Senior Day Spoiled as Choctaws Drop Twinbill to No. 3/5 Delta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team had Senior Day spoiled as the Choctaws dropped a twinbill to in-state foe No. 3 Delta State. DSU claimed the opening contest 13-2 and followed with a 5-2 victory in the finale.
 
GAME ONE
KEY STATS
  • Blaine Crim amassed three of Choctaws' hits in the contest as the Mobile, Ala., sophomore went 3-for-3 at the dish. Chance Whitten logged the lone RBI for the Navy and Gold in the game.
  • Jake Fraze (3-5) tossed 2.2 frames in the loss on the bump. Fraze allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Seth Birdsong (8-1) claimed the win on the hill with the complete-game effort. Birdsong held MC to eight hits and two runs – one earned – along with six strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen used three home runs in their first three trips to the plate to take an early 5-0 lead. Emil Ellis got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the first and Zack Shannon followed with a solo shot later in the frame.
  • Shannon added his second homer of the day in the third to extend the lead to five runs.
  • MC got on the board in the fourth as Whitten singled to score Casey Echols and clip the deficit to four runs.
  • DSU picked up its fourth home run of the game as Nick Morgan hit a three-shot to expand the lead to 8-1 in the top of the fifth.
  • Hunter Wilson logged the remaining Choctaw run as he scored on a throwing error.
  • DSU added four runs in the sixth, headlined by a Clay Casey three-run home run, and another run in the seventh to cap the scoring.
 

GAME TWO
KEY STATS
  • Kyle Smith recorded the only multiple hit effort in the game as he went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Hunter Austin tallied the remaining RBI for MC in the game.
  • Hunter Mullis (4-4) took the setback on the mound. Mullis allowed five runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings in the start while he fanned three and walked one.
  • Tre Hobbs (6-4) received the complete-game win on the hill. Hobbs allowed just one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen got off to their second, hot start of the day with five runs in the third inning. Shannon and Casey each logged home runs in the third inning. Shannon collected a three-run shot and Casey followed with a solo home run after Justin Nussbaum scored on a Brian Lane sacrifice fly earlier in the frame.
  • MC logged its first run of the game in the fifth as Hunter Sykes scored on a Smith RBI single through the left side.
  • The Choctaws added their lone remaining run in the sixth as Crim scored on an Austin sac fly to right field.
