Choctaws Claim Series at Lee; Split Monday Twinbill

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College baseball team split in a Monday doubleheader at Lee University. MC claimed the first contest 6-2, but dropped the final contest of the series 6-5. The Choctaws move to 19-23 and 14-15 in the Gulf South Conference while Lee moves to 25-21 and 12-18 in the league.
 
 
GAME ONE
KEY STATS
  • Four Choctaws registered multiple hits in the contest led by Casey Echols going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Chance Whitten, Blaine Crim and Hunter Sykes recorded two hits each. Crim joined Echols with two RBI for his second, multi-RBI effort of the series.
  • Hunter Mullis (4-3) logged the win on the mound. The junior tossed 7.0 innings in the start and allowed six hits along with five strikeouts and three walks.
  • Tim Holloway (2) garnered his second save of the season as he pitched the final two innings and struck out two while facing just five batters.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MC jumped on the board early behind a RBI single from Crim in the top of the first, which scored Echols.
  • Whitten extended the lead in the top of the fourth as he scored on a wild pitch after leading the inning off with a triple – his first of the season.
  • After the Flames clipped the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth, Crim registered his second RBI of the day with a single up the middle to score Kyle Smith.
  • The Choctaws added a run in the top of the eighth as Will Elliott singled down the left field line to score Echols.
  • After loading the bases with no outs, Lee grabbed its remaining run in the bottom of the eighth as Geremy Walton scored on a Peyton Meeker sacrifice fly to left field.
  • MC responded with two runs in the visiting half of the ninth as Echols drove in Hunter Wilson and Sykes.
  
 
GAME TWO
KEY STATS
  • Wilson and Crim led MC with two hits each in the contest while Austin and Barber each drove in a pair of runs for the Navy and Gold.
  • Tim Holloway (2-4) took the loss on the mound in his second appearance of the day. Holloway surrendered one run on one hit and a strikeout in a third of an inning of action.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Choctaws wasted no time getting on the board with four runs in the top of the first inning headlined by Barber's two-run single up the middle that scored Crim and Echols. Smith drove in the first run of the game with a single up the middle that plated Wilson. Austin picked up a RBI on a 4-3 putout.
  • The Flames took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the second with five runs. The big inning was headlined by Walton's two-run single and Nate Wierzgac's two-run home run.
  • MC knotted the contest at 5-all in the top of the third as Austin doubled to left center to score Crim, who led the inning off with a single.
  • Wierzgac belted a solo home run for the walk-off home run.
