Choctaws Topple Spring Hill College

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team avenged an earlier setback this season with a 10-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon against Spring Hill College. MC improved to 17-22 on the season while the Badgers fell to 23-20.

KEY STATS
  • Five Choctaws recorded multiple hits in the contest led by Hunter Wilson's 3-for-5 day. Kyle Smith, Casey Echols, Chance Whitten and Grant Barber each added a pair of hits.
  • Echols led a trio of players with multi-RBI efforts with three. Whitten and Wilson each chimed in a pair.
  • MC sent six hurlers to the mound on the day with Hunter Lacefield (4-3) getting the win on the bump with 2.0 innings pitched and two strikeouts along with three hits. Jake Fraze joined his fellow junior hurler with 2.0 innings of scoreless work as he allowed just one hit and fanned three.
  • Shelby Craddock and Tim Holloway closed the door with an inning each to close the game. Neither allowed a run in the action on the bump.
  • The Choctaws went 7-for-15 (.467) with runners in scoring position in the game and hit .500 (3-for-6) with runners on third and less than two outs.
  • The Choctaw hurlers combined for 100 strikes in 144 total pitches in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MC held a 6-3 lead through two innings of play in the contest and never relinquished the advantage the remainder of the way.
  • Whitten got the scoring started in the first inning for the Navy and Gold as he singled to right field to score Wilson.
  • After SHC picked up three runs in the top of the second, MC rattled off five runs in the home half to regain the lead. Echols headlined the inning with a two-run, single up the middle that plated Wilson and Hunter Sykes. Whitten and Wilson each drove in runs in the inning. While Austin Warkentin scored on a fielding error by the Badgers.
  • The Purple and White added its lone remaining run in the top of the seventh on a Ulysses Fluellen solo home run to clip the lead to 6-4.
  • Spring Hill thought it had a second homer in the game in the top of the eighth when Maverick Latour sent a ball rising over the left field wall, but Echols was able to rob the Badgers of the dinger and keep the deficit at two runs.
  • The Choctaws added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to pad it lead as Wilson, Smith and Echols each drove in runs. Wilson and Smith rounded out the scoring by crossing the dish on SHC miscues.

NEXT UP
  • Mississippi College returns to Gulf South Conference play this weekend as it travels to Cleveland, Tenn., to face Lee University in a key conference series. The three-game stint is slotted by a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 1 p.m. Sunday's finale is keyed in for a 12 p.m. start first pitch. Both times are central.
