Choctaws Use 10-Run Inning to Blast William Carey

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team used a 10-run, eighth inning to run-rule William Carey on Tuesday evening and improve its win streak to five games.

KEY STATS
  • MC banged out a season-high 22 hits in the effort as seven Choctaws recorded multiple hits and all nine batters recording a hit. Will Elliott led the Navy and Gold with four hits, three RBI and four runs scored. The senior from Oxford, Miss., also tallied his third home run of the season.
  • Hunter Wilson, Hunter Austin, Kyle Smith and Casey Echols each tallied three hits while Hunter Sykes and Kyle Smith each posted a pair of hits in the game. Blaine Crim added a team-best four RBI in the performance.
  • Tommy Taborda (1-2) registered his first win of the season with 1.0 inning of work in relief. The sophomore hurler allowed two runs on one hit with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
  • MC went 6-for-8 at the plate with the leadoff hitter and posted a clip of .512 on the night. The Choctaws also made the most of their chances with the bases loaded hitting .500.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After William Carey tied the game at 10-all in the top of the eighth, MC totaled its 10 runs on seven hits and capitalized on a pair of Crusader errors to capture the win.
  • The Choctaws loaded the bases early with a pair of singles and a walk to open the frame. Elliott broke the deadlock with a single through right side to score Sykes and Grant Barber. Echols followed with a single to score Smith and give MC a 13-10 lead.
  • After a WCU error and hit by pitch reloaded the bases, Austin delivered a two-RBI single to increase the lead to 17-10. Smith then followed two batter later with a double that plated Sykes, Barber and Austin.
  • MC grabbed an early 5-2 lead in the contest through three innings. WCU cut the deficit to a run on the second of two, two-run home runs from James Land in the top of the fourth. Land finished with three homers on the day, his final shot coming in the fifth as he drove in three runs.
  • The Choctaws responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth as Crim and Wilson each recorded RBI hits. MC added a run in the sixth and Elliott's home run in the seventh to grab a 10-8 lead, but William Carey drew even in top of the eighth with a pair of runs.
  • With two runners on and one out, the Crusaders looked to take their first lead of the game, but Taborda fanned Tyler Graves and Land to finish the frame.
