Choctaws Offense Explodes in Twinbill; MC Sweeps West Georgia

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball had an offensive explosion as it swept the University of West Georgia. The Choctaws combined for 31 hits and 25 runs in the twinbill as they toppled UWG 15-11 in the opening game and followed with a 10-1 victory in the night cap.

Game One
  • Seven Choctaws recorded multiple hits in the game led by the trio of Hunter Austin, Grant Barber and Hunter Sykes, who totaled a team-best three hits each. Hunter Wilson, Will Elliott, Blaine Crim and Chance Whitten each logged two hits apiece.
  • Austin and Elliott each drove in three runs followed by Wilson and Barber with two RBI each.
  • Jake Fraze (3-3) claimed the win on the mound in a relief effort. Fraze pitched 4.1 innings and allowed two runs – neither earned – on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • Mississippi College clung to a 7-5 lead through four innings after the two teams exchanged lead changes.
  • A pair of two-RBI hits, including a two-run home run in the top of the fifth lifted West Georgia back in front 9-7, but MC responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead as the inning was headlined by a two-RBI double from Elliott to score Kyle Smith and Sykes and place MC up 12-9.
  • Blaine Crim extended the lead in the sixth with a solo home run to put the Navy and Gold up 13-11.
  • The Wolves added a two-run single in the top of the eighth, but couldn't overcome the deficit as MC posted two RBI doubles in the home half of the eighth to push the lead back out to four runs.

Game Two
  • After leading 2-1 through the first two innings, MC exploded with seven runs in the bottom of the third to secure the series sweep. The Choctaws totaled seven hits in frame.
  • Echols pushed the first run of the inning across the plate with a double to left center that scored Elliott, who led off with a double.
  • Crim followed with a two-run home run to score Echols and extend the lead to 5-1.
  • Wilson and Elliott each added run-scoring hits in frame.
  • The final MC run came in the fourth as Sykes singled to center field to score Barbee, who reached on a two-out, walk.
