Choctaws Topped at Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team fell 5-2 at Spring Hill College on Wednesday, Mar. 1 at Historic Stan Galle Field.
 
TURNING POINT
  • Brennan Fontenot put the Badgers on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run that scored Maverick Latour. The homer was the second of the season for Fontenot and gave SHC a 2-1 lead.
 
KEY STATS
  • Casey Echols posted a multiple hit effort for MC, including a double, a RBI and a run scored.
  • Conner Harrison led the Badgers with three hits while Brennan Fontenot joined with two hits and three RBI.
  • Zack Ingram (0-4) pitched 6.1 innings in the start. Ingram struck out four and allowed three runs – two earned – on eight hits in the setback.
  • Justin Whitsett (3-1) recorded the win on the bump for SHC with a scoreless, 4.0 innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts. Hunter DArmond (3) logged a save with 1.2 innings in relief with a strikeout and a hit.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Choctaws jumped on the board in the top of the second inning as Echols scored on a ground out. The senior reached on a leadoff single and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches.
  • MC attempted a threat in the top of the third behind walks from Grant Barber and Echols and Crim getting hit by a pitch, but the Choctaws left the bags full.  
  • Conner Harrison extended the Purple and White's lead with a RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the fifth.
  • After the Navy and Gold diverted the Badgers' threat in the seventh, leaving the bases loaded, MC pulled to within a run in the top of the eighth as Echols doubled down the left field line to score Blaine Crim.
  • SHC added two runs in the bottom of the eight. The Badgers first run came on a bases loaded walk that pushed Austin Jacquez across the dish. Michael Druhan added the second run on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Daniel Rodriguez.
 
NEXT UP
  • The Choctaws return to Gulf South Conference action this weekend as they host Shorter University beginning Saturday, Mar. 4 with a doubleheader slated for 2 p.m. The final game of the series is set for Sunday, Mar. 5 at 1 p.m.
