Choctaws Use Season-High Scoring and Long Ball to Best Boll Weevils

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball snapped a seven-game slide on Wednesday, Feb. 22 as the Choctaws downed the University of Arkansas at Monticello, 10-5, at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium.

TURNING POINT
  • Chance Whitten hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to lift MC to a 5-3 lead. The three runs were part of four scored in the inning to give the Choctaws a 6-3 advantage.

KEY STAT
  • The 10 runs marked a season-high in a single game for the Navy and Gold. The previous best was nine runs scored in the fourth game of the series with Florida Tech on Feb. 4.
  • The nine RBI also eclipsed a season-high with the previous mark of six coming against FIT.
  • Two Choctaws recorded multiple hits in the victory. Blaine Crim went 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. Will Elliott added a two hit performance with a RBI and three runs scored.
  • Hunter Wilson joined Whitten with a multi-RBI effort as he drove in a pair of runs.
  • Jake Fraze (2-2) logged the win on the mound with 2.0 innings of action. The junior hurler surrendered just one walk in the relief appearance to snag his second win of the season.
  • Drake Streeter (0-2) received the loss on the bump with six runs – five earned – on three hits with two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAM jumped out early with a 3-0 lead through its first two trips to the plate. The scoring was headlined by a two-run home run by Brian Ray in the first inning.
  • With Elliott and Casey Echols standing at first and third with no outs in the second inning, a balk by UAM starter Drake Streeter allowed Echols to cross the dish for the first MC run while Elliott moved up to second. The duo both drew walks to reach base and Echols used a wild pitch to grab two bases to set up the first run.
  • A batter later, Elliott scored on a Hunter Sykes sacrifice fly to left field and clip the deficit to a run.
  • MC blanked the Boll Weevils in the top of the third setting up the four-run, third frame that placed the Choctaws in front for the remainder of the game.
  • Hunter Austin drove in the final run of the third inning with a RBI single up the middle to score Echols.
  • UAM added a run in the top of the fifth, but Elliott delivered his second home run of the season to match the Green and White's scoring in the inning and keep the three-run lead intact.
  • Crim and Wilson each delivered RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings to expand the lead to 10-4 through eight innings.
  • The Boll Weevils drew their final run of the contest as Lathan McFadden scored a on a bases loaded walk, but the damage was minimalized as Hunter Mullis struck out the final two batters to end the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • MC's leadoff hitters went 5-for-8 at the plate (.625) while the Choctaws hit .300 with runners on for the contest.
  • The Boll Weevils left nine runners stranded on base while MC left six.

NEXT UP
