Baseball Preview: Arkansas-Monticello

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at it hosts the 31st-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello. First pitch of the non-conference contest is slated for 3 p.m.

THE SERIES
Mississippi College and Arkansas-Monticello meet for the 36th time in history. UAM leads the series 20-15 with the two squads splitting the last 10 contests. The Boll Weevils claimed the last outing between the two teams with a 10-4 win in Clinton last season.
 
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES
The Choctaws look to end a seven-game slide after dropping a Gulf South Conference series at 17th-ranked West Florida over the weekend. Casey Echols led MC at the dish with a .500 clip, including his first home run of the season, and three RBI.
 
MC has two hitters batting over .300 on the season led by Echols with a .375 clip. Will Elliott ranks second on the team with a .323 batting average and is second on the team in RBI with five this season. Chance Whitten paces the squad with six RBI.
 
Samuel Harrison leads the Choctaw hurlers with a 1.50 ERA in two appearances. The sophomore made his debut last Wednesday at Montevallo with two scoreless innings of action in the start as he allowed just one hit. He tossed 4.0 frames at West Florida on Saturday in relief allowing just a run on four hits.
 
Tommy Taborda leads the pitching staff with 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings while Jake Fraze has 13 punch outs in 14.0 innings of action.
 
ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO NOTES
The Boll Weevils are 3-7 on the season after falling 14-8 to Great American Conference foe East Central on Sunday to lose the series 2-1 to the Tigers. Wednesday marks the third midweek outing of the season for the Green and White as it has a 19-8 loss vs. GSC foe Union last week. UAM logged a 7-5 win over fellow GAC member Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Arkadelphia, Ark.
 
Kris Brown started both midweek outings for UAM this season. Brown tossed 6.2 combined innings in the two midweek contests with six runs allowed on 12 hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
 
Five UAm hitters have a batting average over .300 led by Nick Piraino with a .368 clip in 10 games. Andres Rios leads the team with 11 RBI while batting .342 for the season.
 
Jared Libke leads the team with 14 strikeouts this season while Braden Chambers has 13 – second on the team.
 
NEXT UP
Mississippi College returns to GSC action this weekend with a series at West Alabama. First pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Livingston, Ala., is scheduled for 2 p.m. The series finale is for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
