Choctaws Fall at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team's attempt at a rally fell short as the Choctaws dropped a 6-4 contest at the University of Montevallo on Wednesday, Feb. 15. MC moves to 1-7 on the season while the Falcons improve to 6-2.
 

TURNING POINT
  • Matthew Furuto placed UM up 5-2 in the fourth with a three-run, two-out home run. The three-run homer came off a pair of runs scored in the bottom of the third to tie the contest.

KEY STATS
  • Mississippi College got multiple hit efforts from a pair of Choctaws in the setback. Blaine Crim led the team going 3-for-5 with a double, walk and two runs scored. Will Elliott joined the Mobile, Ala., sophomore with two hits in three at-bats with a home run and a walk.
  • MC starter Samuel Harrison tossed 2.0 innings allowing a hit with two walks and a strikeout.
  • Tim Hollowing took the loss on the mound as he allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and strikeout in two innings of work.
  • Justin Whitley received the win in relief with 4.0 innings of work with two runs – one earned – on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
  • Sebastien Samuels led Montevallo at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles, along with a RBI and run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Montevallo left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Will Elliott gave MC the lead in the top of the second inning with his first home run of the season - a solo shot down the right field line.
  • Hunter Austin placed MC up 2-0 in the top of the third with a RBI single that scored Crim, who led off the frame with a double down the left field line.
  • Montevallo used three hits in the bottom of the third to plate a pair of runs and tie the contest at two-all.
  • Following the UM The Choctaws clipped the lead to a run on a Chance Whitten two-run home run that scored Crim, who reached on an error, in the top of the fifth.
  • UM extended the lead to two runs, 6-4, in the bottom of the fifth on as Mark Castellucci singled to center field to score Sebastien Samuels.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Mississippi College diverted Montevallo threats in the first and fifth innings as the Falcons left the bags full in both innings. UM left a total of 12 runners on base in the contest. MC left 10 runners on base.
  • The Choctaws sent four pitchers to hill in relief appearances.

NEXT UP
Mississippi College opens Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 18 as it travels to Pensacola, Fla., to face the University of West Florida. The Saturday twinbill is slated for 4 p.m.
