Lady Choctaws Edged by Lee

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team was edged 61-60 by Lee University on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Lady Choctaws move to 11-11 and 8-10 in the Gulf South Conference while Lee improved to 17-7 and 12-6 in the conference.
 
TURNING POINT
  • Taylor Boggess drained one of her two 3-pointers on the night with 7:10 to play to place the Flames up 49-46. The freshman hit a trey to tie the contest at 46-all 30 seconds prior to the one to give LU the lead for good.
 
KEY STATS
  • Three Lady Choctaws scored in double figures led by Ashley Minor with 12 points. The Natchez, Miss., native has scored in double-digits 32 times in her career and 14 this season.
  • Kelley Allen added 11 points while Olivia Mabry provided 10 points. It marks Allen's 17th game in double figures this season and the seventh of Mabry's career – six this season.
  • Lee was paced by Carrie Cheeks with 12 points and 12 rebounds – both team-bests.
  • The two squads each grabbed 44 rebounds.
  • Mississippi College connected on 35.7 percent of its shots from the floor while Lee shot 31.3 percent.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trailing 28-24 at the half, Mississippi College outscored the Flames 18-9 in the third quarter to take a 42-37 lead into the final period of play.
  • The Lady Choctaws used a 10-6 run to deadlock the contest at 34-all with 3:07 left to play in the third quarter. A pair of free throws from Minor placed MC up 35-34 with 2:29 left in the quarter. The lead was the first since 20-19 with 7:14 left before the half for the Navy and Gold.
  • MC kept the pressure on Lee and extended its lead to 40-35, its largest lead of the game, with 1:45 left in the period on a Toni Woods' jumper.
  • Lee whittled the Lady Choctaws' advantage down 44-43 early in the final 10 minutes, but an Allen jumper pushed the lead back out to three points for the Navy and Gold with 8:12 left to play.
  • Boggess hit the first of back-to-back 3-pointers with 7:41 to play to knot the contest at 46-all.
  • Trailing 49-46, Mabry knocked down a pair of free throws, but the third, Flame trey in as many as possessions, this time from Anna Woodford, extended the deficit 52-48 with 6:26 left in the contest.
  • Lee expanded to its largest lead with under four minutes to play on Cheeks' jumper – giving LU a 57-48 advantage.
  • MC cut the lead to a point on two different occasions down the stretch, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lee scored 20 points off 20 Lady Choctaw turnovers and held an advantage in bench scoring 19-17.
  • MC was plus-four in points in the paint as the Navy and Gold scored 26 paint while Lee totaled 22 points.
 
NEXT UP
  • Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 16 as it travels to Memphis, Tenn., to face Christian Brothers in a pivotal GSC contest. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
