Lady Choctaws Swat Away Bulldogs in 84-67 Victory

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team tied a 2017-18 Gulf South Conference mark with 11 blocked shots in an 84-67 win over Tougaloo on Saturday afternoon in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Lady Choctaws improved to 5-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 5-7.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a tight first quarter, junior Shuntavia Rodgers hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Choctaws a 23-19 lead after one period.
- MC would go on to score the first 16 points of the second quarter and would lead by at least 12 the rest of the game.
- A three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half by freshman Lauran Sheriff would give MC a 50-29 advantage at the break.
- In the second half, the Bulldogs would make a run and cut the advantage to 12, but the Lady Choctaws would hold off any late charge and grab the win.
 

KEY STATS
- The Lady Choctaws shot 45% from the floor and held Tougaloo to 34% shooting.
- Senior Kelley Allen recorded her fourth double-double off the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
- Sheriff led the block party for the Lady Choctaws, sending away four shots, while junior Emery Wilson and sophomore Kaitlyn Thompson each blocked two shots.
- Sheriff was the other Lady Choctaw in double-figures as 10 of the 11 MC players to see action scored at least five points.
- Chesha Lewis had a team-high 16 points for Tougaloo, while Montoria Atkinson had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
 

NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Tuesday (Jan. 2) night when they host North Alabama at 5:30 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
