Men's Basketball Preview: Southern-New Orleans

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will play their first regular season home game on Monday night when they welcome Southern-New Orleans to A.E. Wood Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The Choctaws (1-2) and Knights (0-4) met last Tuesday with MC pulling away late for a 77-60 win in the Crescent City. MC outscored SUNO 27-6 over the final 9:27 to get the come-from-behind, road victory.

The Choctaws, led by 14th-year head coach Don Lofton, picked up their first win of the season against the Knights last Tuesday after a tough road trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, falling to Embry-Riddle and Palm Beach Atlantic.

Senior Stacey Mack (17.7 ppg) is the team's leading scorer on the early season, putting up a career-high 23 points in each of his last two outings. On Saturday against William Carey, he scored 22 in the exhibition contest. Sophomore Brandon Boston (12.0 ppg) is the team's leading rebounder (6.0 rpg), and the Pearl native put up a career-high 18 points in the season-opener against Embry-Riddle.

In Saturday's exhibition game against William Carey, the Choctaws went on a 16-2 run over the final 6:27 to get an 80-77 victory over the Crusaders. Senior Antonio Johnson scored 12 second-half points, including hitting a pair of free throws to clinch the game with under a second remaining.

In the win over SUNO, Mack scored 23 points, while Boston had 14. Junior Donovan Ham, who scored the game winning basket against William Carey, had 16 points off the bench.
 

SOUTHERN-NEW ORLEANS

Marcel Daniels led the Knights with 20 points last Tuesday against the Choctaws, going 7-of-17 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Teandre Jones was also in double-figures with 10 points, while George Brock had a team-high seven rebounds.

SUNO shot just 34% (20-of-59) from the field in their loss to the Choctaws, including going just 1-of-10 in the final minutes to allow MC to come back for the victory.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
