Choctaws Use Late Burst to Take Down Southern-New Orleans, 77-60

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team outscored Southern-New Orleans 27-6 in the final 9:26 to pick up a 77-60 victory on Tuesday night in The Castle.

The Choctaws improved to 1-2 on the season, while the Knights fell to 0-4.
 

TURNING POINT
- Trailing 54-50 with just over nine minutes remaining, the Choctaws would go on a 7-0 run, sparked by a three-point play by senior Stacey Mack to take a lead they would not relinquish.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams went back-and-forth in the first half with Mack scoring the Choctaws' first 13 points to give MC a 13-11 lead with 15:04 remaining in the first half.
- The Knights would use an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take their largest lead of the night at 21-15 with just under 12 minutes to go.
- MC answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game and neither team would take more than a three-point lead the rest of the half as the Choctaws would grab a 38-36 advantage at the break.
- In the second half, the Choctaws appeared to be taking control as a layup by sophomore Brandon Boston gave them a 48-43 advantage with 15:12 remaining.
- The Knights scored the next nine points and would eventually grab a 54-50 lead with 9:26 remaining.
- The Choctaws would take over from the point, holding SUNO to just six points the rest of the way, including missing 10 straight field goals and going just 2-for-17 from the field over the final 13:25.
- Conversely, MC would make 8-of-9 shots over a six-minute span and go 8-of-11 from the field over the final run to clinch the 17-point victory.
 

KEY STATS
- The Choctaws shot 54% (28-of-52) from the field, including 57% (13-of-23) in the second half.
- MC scored 32 points in the paint and put up 16 points off 17 SUNO turnovers.
- Mack tied a career and season-high with 23 points, going 9-of-12 from the field and 2-of-3 from the three-point line.
- Junior Donovan Ham (16) and Boston (14) also scored in double-figures, while junior Davy Fisher had nine points on the night.
- The Choctaws outrebounded the Knights 38-32, led by Boston and Mack with eight rebounds apiece.
- MC also had 17 assists on 28 made field goals with Boston and Fisher tallying a team-high four helpers.
- The Knights shot 34% (20-of-59) from the field and went just 4-of-25 (16%) from the three-point line.
- Marcel Daniels scored a team-high 20 points, while Teandre Jones had 10.
 

GAME NOTES
- This was the first-ever meeting between MC and SUNO.
- The teams are scheduled to play again in Clinton on Monday, November 20th.
 

NEXT UP
- The Choctaws will be at home on Saturday (November 18) to face William Carey in an exhibition game at 4:00 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
