CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer officially punched their ticket to the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Postseason Tournament with their 3-2 win over West Florida on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves the Choctaws 2017 record to 11-2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MC cracked the scoreboard first in the 37
th minute of the match, when junior winger
Wanner Paiz headed in a long service from
Rafael Costa for his second score of the season.
- With just over a minute left in the first period, The Choctaws saw their lead improve to 2-0 when senior midfielder
Horacio Gutierrez Jr. took a pass from freshman
Abel Perez and connected for his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 44
th minute.
- MC took their largest lead of the match in the 69
th minute, when Perez took advantage of a blocked shot by
Michael Kuwornu that found his foot for the 3-0 lead.
- West Florida would answer quickly, however, as they retaliated with a goal from David Born just seconds later while still in the 69
th minute.
- The Argos would cut MC's lead to one in the 80
th minute, when Born headed in his second goal of the match off of a corner kick from Tristian Rehrig.
- MC would hold their ground on defense for the final 10 minutes, however, keeping the score at 3-2 for the Choctaw victory.
KEY STATS
- Perez led the way offensively for MC, with both a goal scored and an assist.
- The Choctaws outshot the Argos 20-9 in the contest, putting up 11 shots on goal. MC distributed their shot selection evenly, as they took 10 shots in both the first and second periods.
- In Goal,
Humberto Pelaez notched two saves on the day, while seeing his 2017 record improve to 11-2-3.
- The Choctaws took eight corner kicks in the match, while the Argos took five.
- MC was on the receiving end of five fouls, while the Argos were whistled for 10.
- MC was tagged for two yellows and one red, compared to the Argos one yellow.
MATCH NOTES
- The win marks for the Choctaws third in four matches, two of which have been decided by one goal.
- The one-goal victory for MC marks for the sixth time this season that the Choctaws have bested their opponent by one score.

- The Choctaws will return to action on Friday, Nov. 3, when they take on Alabama Huntsville in the semifinal round of the GSC Postseason Tournament in Montgomery, Ala. Match time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
