Late Goal Sinks Men's Soccer 1-0 in GSC Semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- An Alabama Huntsville goal in the 86th minute was all it took to sink the Mississippi College men's soccer team 1-0 in their Gulf South Conference Semifinals match against the Chargers on Friday, Nov. 3. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half, as the Choctaws outshot the Chargers 5-4 in the period.
- MC saw a handful of opportunities to score in period number two, with their closest coming in the 81st minute off a Javier Avelar shot that just caught a piece of the charging UAH keeper. The Choctaws saw another close scoring oppotunity go for not in the 89th minute, when Victor Bazan missed just wide on a close range shot with the UAH keeper drawn out. 
- The game-winning goal came off of a free kick from forward Jordan Wright from 20-plus yards out.

KEY STATS
- Wanner Paiz and Abel Perez led the way offensively for MC, with three shots taken apiece.
- Horacio Gutierrez fired a team-high two shots on goal on the day 
- The Choctaws outshot the Chargers 13-9 on the day, putting up five in the first half and eight in the second.
- MC took four shots on goal on the day, compared to UAH's two.
- In goal, Humberto Pelaez collected one save on the day, while seeing his 2017 record drop to 11-3-3.
- MC took five corner kicks in the match, while holding UAH to three.
- The Choctaws were whistled for nine fouls, while the Chargers were on the receiving end of nine.
- UAH was booked for two yellow cards, while MC was tagged for one.

MATCH NOTES
- The loss drops MC's 2017 record to 11-3-3, while also ending their run in the 2017 GSC Postseason Tournament.
