CLINTON, Miss. --- The number 16-ranked Mississippi College men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the 2017 season, falling 3-0 to Union University on Sunday afternoon.
TURNING POINT
- With just under 10 minutes left in the match, the bulldogs took a 3-0 lead on a goal from Robel Dent, who was assisted by AJ Morgado. The goal served as the proverbial nail-in-the-coffin for Union in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Union found the back of net twice in the first period. Goals by AJ Morgado in the 16
th minute, and William Valencia in the 34
th minute gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
- The Choctaws saw several scoring opportunities in the second period, but could not capitalize.
- MC saw two of their best chances within a one-minute time frame of each other. Sophomore forward
Dominic Snee delivered a flush header strike off of an MC corner kick that found the arms of Union keeper Casper Nyberg in the 71
st minute, and junior midfielder
Wanner Paiz fired a strong strike from just outside of the box that clanked off of the crossbar in the 72
nd minute.
- Morgado's score in the 82
nd minute gave way to the 3-0 score.
KEY STATS
- The Choctaws outshot the Bulldogs 21 to seven in the contest. MC took nine shots in the first half, and 12 in the second.
- Six of the Choctaw's shots on the day were on goal.
- In goal, senior keeper
Humberto Pelaez grabbed one save on the day, while dropping his 2017 record to 8-1-1.
- The Choctaws took 11 corner kicks in the match, while holding the Bulldogs to just one.
- MC was charged with nine fouls, while Union was held accountable for eight.
- Union was on the receiving end of both yellow cards passed out in the match.
MATCH NOTES
- With the loss, the Choctaw's record falls to 8-1-1 on the season, and 5-1 in GSC play.
- The loss snaps a seven-match win streak for MC, a mark that tied for the second-longest streak in program history.
- The Choctaws were held scoreless for the first time all season on the afternoon.
UP NEXT
- The Choctaws will host the Chargers of the University of Alabama Huntsville on Friday, Oct. 6 in GSC play. Match time at Longabaugh Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
