CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team dropped a tightly-contested, 3-0, Gulf South Conference match against the University of West Alabama on Saturday afternoon. MC moves to 7-6 on the season and 1-5 in conference play while UWA improved to 9-4, 3-2 in the league.
Â
The Navy and Gold out attacked the Tigers in each set, but couldn't find a way to overcome unforced errors to notch back-to-back, GSC wins following Friday night's sweep of West Georgia. MC committed nine, service miscues. The Lady Choctaws posted a .207 attack clip for the contest and held the Red and White to a .143 mark.
Â
Madison Frazier paced the squad with seven kills.
Sydney Chandler became the fifth player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 assist mark as the Mobile, Ala., native recorded a team-best 17 on the day. The junior has 1,012 in her career.
Â
"I feel like we beat ourselves," said head coach
Julie Redus. "All of our hitters were on fire tonight, but we had so many unforced errors and missed serves that assisted in the loss today. I'm proud of
Sydney Chandler, who moved into fifth all-time in assists. She played well for us today. It's going to be a tough week with four matches on the road, but if we come out to fight, we can't be underestimated."

MC opens its four-game, road swing against 23rd-ranked West Florida on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m.
Â
Shelby Grace Mays helped guide the defensive effort. The Arab, Ala., sophomore recorded 11 digs and two blocks while
Madison Kimes picked up a team-best 18 digs in the setback. Mays tied
Kayana Mitchell with two blocks as the duo also finished tied for second on the team with six kills.
Â
Trailing 20-15 in the opening set, MC pulled to within 23-22 on a Chandler-assisted,
Ashton King kill. However, UWA answered with two of the next three points to clinch the match. Mitchell garnered three kills during the scoring spurt followed by a pair from King.
Â
After falling 25-18 in the second set, the Lady Choctaws held a 20-16 advantage in the third set sparked by three straight kills from Frazier and six of her team-best total in the set. UWA battled back and knotted the contest at 22-all – forcing a MC timeout – before closing the set out 25-23.
Â
West Alabama was led by Briana Sandifer's 10 kills followed by nine from Yanesha Johnson. Callie Murphy added 24 assists while Sandifer also notched a team-best 18 digs.
Â
The four-game, road stretch also features GSC outing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Sept. 30 and the University of North Alabama on Oct. 1. A non-conference affair with Miles College is tabbed for Huntsville.
