CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team snapped a four-game skid with a 3-0, Gulf South Conference sweep over West Georgia. The win marked the first in conference play with season for the Lady Choctaws, who move to 7-5 on the season and 1-4 in league play. UWG falls 3-9 and 0-5 in the conference.
Â
It marks the first time the Navy and Gold swept a conference opponent since Oct. 25, 2012 against the University of Texas at Tyler.
Â
"Tonight was a good, old-fashioned win. We adjusted the fastest and ultimately that helped us in our overall play," said head coach
Julie Redus. "It was really good for us to not have a mid-week game. We had almost a whole week to learn, grow and put in hard work. We applied those things tonight to help us win."
Â
Madison Frazier posted a team-best nine kills in the win – all coming in the final set. The effort ties a season-high for the Pascagoula, Miss., native.
Jenna Campbell and
Kayana Mitchell each added seven kills in the performance.
Â
Bailee Berringer and
Sydney Chandler setup the offense; helping the Lady Choctaws to a season-best .387 attack clip. Berringer dished out a team-best 21 assists while Chandler added 16.
Â
Defensively, MC received a strong effort from
Madison Kimes and
Krista Zieschang. The duo combined for 27 of squad's 39 digs. Kimes led the way with 15 while Zieschang added 12.
Shelby Grace Mays provided a pair of blocks while Campbell, Mitchell and
Jamila Biglow each tallied one.
Â
"Our hitters were on tonight, plain and simple," Redus said. "Our defense was able to pick up balls to turn over to our offense. It's always great to get a win, but to shut out a team in our house with the amount of support we had in the gym was incredible. We know we face a tough team coming up tomorrow, but we now know the feeling of winning."
Â
MC, which hosts West Alabama on Saturday, battled back from 11-6 down in the opening set to knot the contest at 12-all – forcing UWG into its first timeout. The Lady Choctaws continued to add pressure as it pushed its lead out to 21-16 before claiming the first set 25-19.
Â
After forcing the Wolves into an 8-3, timeout in the second set, the Red and Blue attempted to nip into the deficit – clipping the margin to 11-10, but MC answered as it closed the second set out behind a 14-7 run to clinch a 25-17 victory.
Â
The two squads exchanged leads and ties through the final set – standing deadlocked at 13-all. MC went a 4-1 spurt to force West Georgia into a timeout at 17-14. UWG pulled back within a point at 19-18, but an attack error and kill by Frazier pushed the lead to 21-18 and the second Wolves' timeout.
