Volleyball Posts Pair of 3-0 Wins; Finishes Belhaven Classic Undefeated

The 6-1 start marks the best since the 1994 team went 7-0 to open its campaign.

JACKSON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team logged a pair of victories to close out and finish as the only unblemished squad at the Belhaven Classic. The Lady Choctaws (6-1) delivered two 3-0 victories as they downed Centenary (La.) and the host Blazers.

The 6-1 start marks the best since the 1994 team went 7-0 to open its campaign.

The win over Belhaven snapped a seven-game losing streak and is the first three-set win over the Blazers since Sept. 27, 2005 in Clinton and the first on BU's home floor since Nov. 6, 1996. The win over Centenary is the fourth straight over the Maroon and White.

"This weekend's sweep was a great start to our season. It's been really good for us to get wins under our belts," said head coach Julie Redus. "We've had some games to help work out our kinks and to strengthen our weaknesses. We're able to run an offense from in front or behind the 10-foot line and we are hitting the floor to keep the play alive. Our once underclassmen are now upperclassmen and have seen all the teams in this conference. We are going to continue playing our game no matter our opponent. We are excited to kick off conference this week and to continue on doing what we do."

MC posted a 58-percent attack percentage in the opener against the Ladies and followed with a 66 clip in the three-setter against the Green and Gold. The Navy and Gold dismantled Centenary in the opening set 25-13 behind an attacking clip of 71 percent. MC claimed the final two sets 25-22 and 27-25 to clinch the match.

Madison Frazier paced the Lady Choctaws with nine kills in the opening contest followed by eight from Kayana Mitchell. Mitchell added six against BU along with a combined seven blocks in the two outings.

MC received a battle from Belhaven in all three sets with the final set going 28-26 following scores of 25-21 and 25-20 in the first two.

Shelby Grace Mays led the Navy and Gold in the second contest with a season-high 10 kills – one off tying her career-high. Season kills' leader Jenna Campbell added eight kills in the affair and finished with 13 combined putaways.

All three setters saw action against Centenary as Sydney Chandler led the way with 14 assists, a total of 32 on the night, followed by 12 from Jordan Veal. Bailee Berringer added seven against Centenary and posted 17 in the nightcap.

Madison Kimes posted a combined 19 digs, including 12 in the opener while Krista Zieschang led the team with 12 against BU.

Mississippi College returns to action on Monday, Sept. 12 as it hosts the Gulf South Conference opener against Shorter University. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
