Men's Tennis Preview: NCCAA Championships

MOBILE, Ala. --- For the second time in three years, the Mississippi College men's tennis team will compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Championships, held at the Mobile Tennis Center May 10-13.

The 8-team field is broken up into two "pools" that will go through round-robin play on Tuesday (May 10) and Wednesday (May 11). The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals on Thursday (May 12) with the championship match on Friday (May 13).

The Choctaws (14-9) enter the tournament as the #5 seed and will be a part of "Pool B" with Oklahoma Baptist (#2), Cedarville (#6) and Point (#8). MC opens play on Tuesday (May 10) with matches against Cedarville (8:30 am) and Point (2:30 pm). They wrap up round-robin play on Wednesday (May 11) against Oklahoma Baptist (8:30 am).

"Pool A" consists of Campbellsville (#1), Belhaven (#3), Warner (#4) and Judson (#7). The Choctaws earned an at-large berth into the tournament after defeating Belhaven in the NCCAA MidEast Regional, but falling to Campbellsville in the championship match.

POOL B PREVIEW
#2 Oklahoma Baptist  |  Shawnee, Okla.  |  Record: 15-8  |  Qualification: Central Region Champion

The Bison enter the tournament as the Central Region champion after picking up two 5-0 victories over Dallas Baptist and McMurry two weeks ago. The NCAA Division II school is a member of the Great American Conference, where they went 0-4 in league play against three nationally-ranked teams. OBU and MC have three common opponents in Harding, McMurry and Ouachita Baptist. Both schools went 0-2 against the two Arkansas schools.

The Choctaws are coming into the national tournament as an at-large team from the MidEast Region after defeating Belhaven (5-4) and falling to Campbellsville (0-5) in the regional. Prior to the loss to the Tigers, MC had run off four straight victories, including wins over Delta State, UAH and Lee from the Gulf South Conference. The Choctaws finished GSC play with a 6-3 record and landed 4th in the standings. MC's only losses in conference play came to nationally-ranked opponents.

The Yellow Jackets enter the tournament as the MidWest Region champion, winning the uncontested title after being the only team from the region to qualify for postseason play. Cedarville, an NCAA Division II school, is a member of the Great Midwest Conference where they finished 3-1 in a three-team league with Davis & Elkins and Salem International. The Yellow Jackets have no common opponents with the Choctaws.

The Skyhawks enter the tournament as an at-large bid from the South Region after falling to Warner University (5-0) in the regional championship match on April 23rd. The NAIA team from the Appalachian Athletic Conference went 3-4 in league play and dropped the opening-round match of the conference tournament to Union College (5-2). MC and Point have one common opponent in Spring Hill College. The Choctaws took down the Badgers, 7-2, while Point won, 8-1.

The Choctaws also went to the NCCAA Tournament in 2014, their first year in the association. MC lost matches to Point, Azusa Pacific and Roberts Wesleyan.
