HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College men's tennis team clinched a spot in the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament with a 6-3 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday afternoon.
The Choctaws (12-8, 5-3 GSC) got things going in doubles, taking 2-of-3 matches over the Chargers (2-17, 1-8 GSC).
Sophomore
Lucio Menezes and freshman
Maximilian Nilges opened things with an 8-5 win at #2, while senior
Phillip Qu and sophomore
Sanders Barrick clinched the early lead with an 8-6 win at #3.
The sophomore tandem of
Petar Damjanovic and
Marcos Rocca nearly made it a clean sweep of doubles, but dropped the #1 point in a tie-break, 9-8 (7-4).
The Choctaws needed three singles wins to clinch the victory and got three in straight sets. Damjanovic (#4) dropped just two games on his way to a victory, while Menezes (#2) lost just five games in his victory.
Rocca (#1) bounced back from the doubles loss to grab a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 victory and take the team win.
Sophomore
Jose Rodrigo Gonzalez (#5) gave the Choctaws their final point of the day with a three-set victory, coming back from dropping the first set (4-6, 6-0, 11-9).
The Chargers won the #3 and #6 points, but Qu put up a fight at #6, falling in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 12-10).
The Choctaws will close out the regular season on Sunday when they face Lee University at 10:00 am in Huntsville, Ala. The match is being finished after it was rained out on March 20th.
