JACKSON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team used a season-high 17 hits to upend Belhaven University, 13-9, on Tuesday evening at Smith-Wills Stadium. MC improves to 14-26 on the season while the Blazers fall to 18-16.
Â
The victory marks the first time since 1989 that the Choctaws are undefeated against Belhaven and Millsaps as MC knocked off the Majors last Tuesday, 6-1.
Â
Five Choctaws collected multiple hit efforts on the night led by
Logan Ferrell's 4-for-5, two-RBI performance at the dish. The senior improved his team-best hit total to 55 following the night as he and
Caleb Upton posted multi-RBI efforts in the win.
Â
Hunter Bolin and Upton each totaled three hits on the evening while
Colton Caver and
Hunter Hall each poured in a pair of hits.
Â
Matt Payne (1-3) received the win on the mound. The junior hurler tossed just 1.0 inning of action allowing five runs on four hits in the relief outing.
Tommy Taborda tossed 4.0 frames in the start. The freshman allowed two runs on two hits with five strikeouts, but didn't pitch the NCAA requirement, five frames to notch a decision.
Â
Parker Watts,
Tyler Bushue and
Samuel Harrison also saw time on the hill as the trio held the Blazers to two runs on six hits over the final four innings of action. The triplets also struck out five batters without surrendering a walk.
Â
MC jumped on the scoreboard early with eight of its 13 runs coming in the first three innings, including a four-run first to start the game. The Choctaws added three more in the third to sandwich a one-run, second inning and hold a commanding 8-0 lead.
Â
Belhaven added its first two runs in the fourth and following a one spot by the Navy and Gold in the top of the fifth, the Blazers cut deep into the Choctaws' advantage with five runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Â
MC answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to provide enough distance to clinch the win. Belhaven added two in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to topple the Choctaws, who added insurance runs in the ninth.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 23 as the Choctaws host Lee University in a three-game, Gulf South Conference series.
