ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Shorter University on Saturday afternoon. MC (7-8, 1-7 GSC) fell 5-1 in the opening contest before falling 5-2 in second outing.
The Choctaw bats were held at bay for most of the afternoon as the squad managed a combined seven hits in the twinbill.
Hunter Bolin,
Blaine Crim,
Will Elliott and
Logan Ferrell each logged a hit in the first contest. Ferrell added a hit in the second outing joining
Caleb Upton and
Hunter Austin.
In both contests, MC jumped on the board first. Ferrell put the Choctaws in front in the first outing with a RBI single in the third to score Elliott. However, Shorter retaliated in the fourth inning with a pair of runs to take the lead and never look back as Patrick Sanderson and Raul Cortez logged RBI singles.
Samuel Harrison (1-1) logged the squad's first complete game of the season as he tossed 8.0 innings. The freshman recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts in the performance, but allowed five runs – four earned on eight hits.
The Hawks added insurance runs in the fifth as Blaze Vazquez drove in a run on a double and Ty Cherry followed with a RBI single.
Austin led off the scoring for the Choctaws in the second contest with a RBI single to left field scoring Crim. The RBI was one of two in the contest for the Vicksburg, Miss., native as he hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Elliott in the fourth to tie the contest at 2-all after SU plated a pair in the bottom of the second.
The Hawks regained the lead in the home half of the fourth when Jacob Ramos singled. The Blue and White added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the twinbill sweep.
Matt Payne (0-1) took his first loss on the mound in a relief appearance. Payne tossed 3.1 frames with three runs – two earned – allowed on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the effort.
Taylor Olsen pitched 1.2 in the start as he surrendered two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Tyler Scholl saw an inning of relief work to close out the contest.
Mississippi College and Shorter meet on Sunday, March 6 for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
