CLINTON, Miss. --- After closing out a season-long, nine-game homestand with a win over William Carey, the Mississippi College baseball team returns to action on Friday, Mar. 25 as the Choctaws travel to University of West Georgia for a three-game, Gulf South Conference series. First pitch of the series is slated for 4 p.m. central. The series concludes on Saturday, Mar. 26 with a doubleheader set to start at Noon central.
Friday's contest marks the 10th meeting between Mississippi College and West Georgia with the Wolves holding a slight 5-4 advantage after claiming all three meetings in the series last season. MC is 2-1 all-time in Carrollton, Ga., but haven't played UWG on its home turf since 1992, when the series began.
This weeken's slate marks the first meeting between Mississippi College skipper
Jeremy Haworth and West Georgia, while UWG's Skip Fite is squaring off against the Choctaws for the second time in his career following the three contests last season.
MC (11-13, 4-10 GSC) is coming off a 6-3 win against William Carey on Tuesday. The Choctaws got multiple hit efforts from
Hunter Hall and
Garrett Odom in the outing as the duo combined for five of the squad's seven hits.
Parker Watts garnered his first career win as he fanned a season-high six batters in four innings of work allowing just one run on four hits.
Tyler Scholl logged his team-best second win of the season tossing the final frame.
The Choctaws are riding a two-game win streak entering the contest after the victory over the Crusaders.
Logan Ferrell leads the team with 31 hits and is second in batting average with a .352 clip.
Hunter Bolin paces the squad with a .385 batting average.
Caleb Upton leads the team with 17 RBI.
Jake Fraze and
Samuel Harrison lead the pitching staff as the duo ranks first and second in innings pitched and strikeouts. Fraze is tops with 46.0 frames and second in strikeouts with 31. Harrison has fanned 36 batters in 38.1 innings. Scholl leads the team in ERA with a 0.47 in 16 appearances (19.1 innings).
West Georgia is 16-9 and 7-8 in the GSC. The Wolves are currently on a three-game skid. Caleb Lopes paces the squad with a .429 batting average and is second in RBI with 24. Dalton Rogers leads the team with 26 runs driven in. Brandon Goldsmith leads the team with 48.1 innings on the mound and has struck out 42 batters. Goldsmith is 5-0 on the season - tops on the team in wins. Colton Duttweiler and Matthew Norton are tied for second in strikeouts with 25 each.
Following the weekend slate, Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 29 as it hosts Spring Hill College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
