CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team opened the
Jeremy Haworth Era with a pair of wins over Tougaloo College. The Choctaws (2-0) rallied to win the first contest 12-8 before closing out the doubleheader with an 8-4 victory.
Hunter Bolin led the offensive charge for the Navy and Gold going 8-for-9 with four RBI in the twinbill. The junior from Starkville, Miss., native was 5-for-6 in the opener with a pair of RBI and three runs scored and followed with a 3-for-3 night in the second outing with two more RBI and a run scored.
Tyler Scholl and
Blaine Crim picked up the wins on the mound for the Choctaws. Scholl pitched 2.2 innings in relief in the first game, allowing just one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Crim went 5.1 frames in the start in the night cap. The freshman allowed four runs – one earned – on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Scholl closed out the final 1.2 innings giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.
Logan Ferrell, Crim and
Toler Robinson each added multi-hit afternoons in the opening contest. The trio each added two hits while Ferrell and
Hunter Hall both drove in multiple runs.
Caleb Upton and
Garrett Odom each recorded multi-RBI efforts in the second contest.
Trailing 7-5 in the opener after five innings, MC tied the contest in the sixth as Ferrell and Crim each tallied RBI. The Choctaws grabbed the lead in seventh with four runs spurred by Bolin's RBI single through the right side. Ferrell, Hall and Upton each posted RBI in the frame to give the Choctaws an 11-7 advantage.
After TC (0-2) added a run in the eighth,
Toler Robinson drove in William Elliott in the bottom of the inning to cap the scoring.
The Bulldogs again jumped on the board first in the second affair with three runs in the first inning, but the Navy and Gold responded with three runs over the first two trips to plate to tie the contest. MC added a pair of runs in the third and another in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
The Choctaws added two more runs in the sixth to answer a one spot by TC in the top of the inning to close out the scoring.
Mississippi College returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 7 as it hosts Tougaloo in the final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
