CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 10-4 over the University of West Florida. The victory is the first in the series for the Choctaws (6-2, 1-0 GSC) and the first time since Feb. 19, 2015 that the squad claimed the first game of a three-game series in GSC action – that coming against Union University in a 3-2, 16-inning marathon.
The win is the first in the conference since topping in-state rival Delta State 7-6 in extra innings on April 11, 2015.
Four Choctaws posted multiple hits in the contest led by
Hunter Bolin and
Logan Ferrell compiling three hits each.
Caleb Upton and
Toler Robinson each added a pair of knocks in the contest.
Blaine Crim, Upton and Robinson each recorded multi-RBI efforts with Crim's two RBI coming off a home run in the first inning to start the scoring.
Logan Ferrell scored on the blast.
Samuel Harrison (1-0) garnered his first win of the season on the mound. The freshman right-hander tossed 4.1, scoreless innings in relief as he tallied a season-high six strikeouts and allowed just four hits.
After Crim's home run in the first frame, MC tacked on four runs in the bottom of the second to answer a single spot placed on the board by UWF in the top of the inning.
Hunter Bolin and Upton each doubled in the frame as Robinson, Crim and Ferrell all crossed the dish. Bolin also scored on an error in the inning to assist in giving the Navy and Gold a 6-1 lead.
UWF added two runs in the third and another in the fourth to close the gap at 6-4, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
Robinson and
Will Elliott each added RBI hits in the fifth and Ferrell scored in the sixth on a fielder's choice to cap the scoring for the Choctaws.
MC logged 13 hits in the contest – tying a season-high – while the Argonauts recorded 10 hits.
Brandon Nagem took the loss on the mound for West Florida pitching just 1.2 innings and surrendering six runs – two earned – on six hits.
Jake Fraze tossed 4.2 innings in the start for the Choctaws. The sophomore allowed four runs – three earned - on six hits with five Ks and three walks.
Mississippi College and West Florida meet for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 20 to close out the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
