CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team opens Gulf South Conference play this weekend as the Choctaws host the University of West Florida. The series is slated to start on Friday, Feb. 19 with a single game at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
Friday marks the fourth meeting between Mississippi College and West Florida with the Argonauts holding the advantage in the series with three wins last season in Pensacola, Fla. This marks the first time that the two teams have met in Clinton.
First-year skipper
Jeremy Haworth has never faced the University of West Florida as head coach. UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat is 3-0 against Mississippi College with the three meetings last season.
MC is 5-2 on the season after falling 7-6 at Southern Arkansas University on Tuesday. The Choctaws took two-of-three games last weekend against North Greenville University at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Ala.
The Choctaws have three players who have hit .400-plus through the first seven games.
Logan Ferrell paces the team with a .480 clip while
Blaine Crim is hitting .440.
Hunter Bolin rounds out the trio with a .429 batting average.
Caleb Upton leads the team with seven RBI while Crim is second on the team with six RBI.
On the mound,
Jake Fraze,
Blaine Crim and Tyler School have led the staff. Fraze and School have posted sub 2.00 ERA while Crim has a 2.19 ERA. Fraze leads the team with 14.2 innings and is second in strikeouts with 11. Crim leads the team with 12 Ks with 12.1 frames - second on the team. Scholl ranks third on the team with 10 strikeouts.
UWF is 3-4 on the season after dropping two-of-three against No. 1 Tampa. The Argonauts logged a 1-0 win on Sunday against UT to salvage the series. Prior to the three-game series against the Spartans, UWF has defeated Mobile 6-4 in Pensacola after dropping two-of-three at Florida Southern to open the season.
Jean Figueroa and Alex Greene led West Florida at the plate. Figueroa is batting .346 to lead the team on the season while Greene is hitting .333. Nic Strasser leads the Argos with seven RBI.
JT Granat and Walker O'Connor pace the pitching staff with pair of the staff's wins on the mound. Granat has posted a 0.93 ERA in his two appearances while O'Connor has a 2.31 ERA and is second on the team in strikeouts with 10. Brandon Nagem leads the hurlers with 12 Ks.
Following the weekend, conference opening series, Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 23 as it travels to the University of Arkansas at Monticello. First pitch is marked for 2 p.m.
