JACKSON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's tennis team opened the 2016 season with a 5-2 win over Division I Jackson State on Tuesday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Center.
The Choctaws (1-0) got things started by winning the doubles point as sophomores
Marcos Rocca and
Joan Valy grabbed the #1 victory by a score of 6-4.
Sophomore
Lucio Menezes and freshman
Maximilian Nilges clinched the opening point with a 6-3 win at the #2 doubles spot.
Valy gave the Choctaws their second point of the match with a straight-set victory (6-0, 6-2) over Miguel Gomez Martin at the #3 singles position.
Rocca also picked up win in two sets (6-2, 7-6 (3)), taking down Camilo Patino at #1 singles.
Menezes and sophomore
Jose Rodrigo Gonzalez needed three sets to get the final two points for MC. Menezes won the #2 singles point over Frederico Boscarino (7-5, 2-6, 6-4), while Gonzalez defeated Geria Hernan at #6 (6-3, 2-6, 6-4).
The Tigers (1-7) got singles wins at #4 and #5 with sophomore
Petar Damjanovic going the distance in a three-set loss to Styliouos Guontsaris (3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3).
The Choctaws will be back in action on Wednesday when they will play their home opener against Alcorn State at 2:00 p.m. at the MC Tennis Complex.
