CLINTON, Miss. --- After claiming its second series win over the weekend, the Mississippi College baseball team travels to Magnolia, Ark., to face Southern Arkansas University in a midweek contest on Tuesday, Feb. 16. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Walker Stadium.
Tuesday marks the first meeting between the two schools since 1996, when SAU claimed a three-game series in Magnolia.
The Choctaws used a 4-0 shutout of North Greenville University on Sunday to claim the series.
Logan Ferrell paced the offensive effort for the Navy and Gold over the three games. The Purvis, Miss., native hit over .555 for the weekend with a pair of multiple hit performances and five runs scored.
Caleb Upton joined Ferrell posting a .500 clip against the Crusaders. The Natchez, Miss., product also posted a pair of multi-hit efforts along with two multiple-RBI outings as he led the team with seven RBI.
MC has five hitters with a plus-.333 batting average on the season and six hitting over .300.
Hunter Bolin and Ferrell lead the squad batting .500 on the campaign. Bolin leads the team with 12 hits while Ferrell has 10 hits. Crim is third on the team with a .400 clip while Upton is hitting .389 while leading the team with seven RBI.
Toler Robinson and
Hunter Hall round out the group with a .368 batting average while Hall is hitting .300.
On the mound,
Tyler Scholl leads the team in appearances with four on the season. The Olive Branch, Miss., hurler is 1-0 on the season with a save. The senior combined for the shutout win over NGU on Sunday. In six innings on the bump, he's allowed just one run – unearned – on three hits with eight strikeouts – which is third on the team.
Jake Fraze and
Blaine Crim lead the staff in wins with two each. Fraze, who started the shutout Sunday, leads the team in innings pitched with 14.2 and has posted a 1.23 ERA with 11 strikeouts. Crim has garnered a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 frames - second on the team - on the hill and is tied for tops in strikeouts with Fraze with 11.
The Muleriders (6-3) claimed three of four outings over the weekend during the SAU Invitational. The Blue and Gold fell 13-5 in its final game of the Invite to Washburn University – snapping a six-game win streak.
Jake Tisevich leads SAU at the dish batting .440 on the season along with a team-best seven RBI. Trevor Rucker and Keaton Miller rank among the leaders in batting average as the duo is hitting over .333 on the campaign with Rucker at .391 and Miller with a .357 clip.
On the mound, the Mulriders have four hurlers with 10-plus innings of work led by Landon Simpson's 12.2 frames. Simpson ranks third on the team in strikeouts with 10 while posting a 6.39 ERA in two appearances. Kenneth Tabor leads the staff in ERA with a 0.75 in 12 innings of action. Tabor leads the squad in strikeouts with 17 and wins with two. Hunter Mayo ranks second in Ks with 11 in 12 frames while posting a 3.75 ERA. Eric Shildt is fourth in innings pitched with 10.2 while garnering a 2.53 ERA. Shildt and Mayo each have a win on the hill.
Following the midweek contest, Mississippi College opens Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Feb. 20 as it hosts the University of West Florida in a three-game series. First pitch of the Saturday twinbill is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the Sunday final slated for a 1 p.m. start.
