HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will play their final road game of the season on Saturday afternoon when they face Gulf South Conference-leading Alabama Huntsville at 4:00 p.m. in Spragins Hall.
This will be the 9th all-time meeting between the two schools with MC holding a 6-2 edge in the series. The Choctaws won the first six contests, while the Chargers have picked up two straight victories, including a 70-64 win in Clinton on January 2nd. MC traveled to Huntsville last season and pulled off a comeback victory over the Chargers, 71-67.
When the two teams played in A.E. Wood Coliseum to open the 2016 calendar year, broke a 34-34 halftime tie to get their second straight win in Clinton.
Tristan Moore led all scorers with 18 points, while
Tory Rice had 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Seab Webster led five players in double-figures for UAH with 14 points.
The Choctaws are coming off, arguably, their most important win of the season on Thursday night with a 77-76 victory at North Alabama. Playing without their top five leading scorers due to injuries and suspensions, the shorthanded Choctaws jumped out to a 60-39 second half lead and
Hunter Ray knocked down a free throw with :07.5 remaining to clinch the win.
Sophomore
Antonio Johnson had a career night with 24 points and six rebounds, going 6-of-8 from the three-point line. Junior
DeOndre Haynes (17), junior
Byron McCall (10) and Ray (7) all notched a career scoring high, while senior
Christian Howard earned his first start in two years and played 30 minutes with seven points.
MC head coach
Don Lofton comes into his 12th season with his 200th career victory in sight. Lofton, who has been a part of the program for more than 30 years, has won 196 games as the head man and coached his 300th career game against UWF.
Senior
Tory Rice (14.0 ppg / 11.8 rpg) missed his fourth straight game due to an injury, while junior
Otis Harvey (7.6 ppg) has been out since mid-December with an injury. Seniors
Tristan Moore (13.6 ppg),
Jonathan McGee (12.9 ppg) and
Johnny Rucker (12.4 ppg) all missed Thursday's game due to a suspension for a violation of team rules during the week.
Howard knocked down two big three-pointers in the win over North Alabama, one in the final minutes that stopped a big run for the Lions and the other in the opening minutes that extended an impressive streak for MC. The Choctaws have now made a long ball in 478 straight games, dating back to March 5, 1998 when MC went 0-7 from long range.
The GSC-leading Chargers are lead by 19th-year head coach Lennie Acuff, who is coming up on 500 career wins with 481 victories over 26 seasons. UAH has won seven straight games and is 10-1 at home this season with the only loss coming to West Alabama on December 10th (66-74).
The Chargers built up a 13-point halftime lead and held on for an 85-79 victory over Delta State on Thursday night. Brandon Roberts led UAH with 26 points, going 9-of-12 from the field. DSU's Devin Schmidt scored a game-high 29 points in the loss.
Seab Webster (14.8 ppg / 6.0 rpg) leads the Chargers in scoring and rebounding and is shooting 41% from the field and 76% from the foul line. Greg Gardner (10.8 ppg) leads the squad with 136 assists and 32 steals.
Robert (14.1 ppg) is shooting 41% from the three-point line and has 37 assists with 19 steals. Troy Saxton (8.4 ppg) ranks second on the team with 56 assists, while Preston Herring (9.3 ppg) has a team-high 33 blocked shots on the season.
