CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team stunned the University of North Alabama in the opening set, but dropped the match 3-1. MC moves to 9-19 and 2-15 in the Gulf South Conference while UNA improves to 25-4 and 15-3 in the conference.
Â
The Lady Choctaws posted an attack clip of .400 in the opening set – the sixth time this season the squad has posted a set of .400 or better – en route to taking a 25-20 victory.
Jamila Biglow recorded five of her team-best eight kills on the night during the opener.
Â
"Tonight wasn't what we wanted, but it's always fun to take a set off the GSC leader. We continue to grow and apply our practices to games," said head coach
Julie Redus. "We came out really hot tonight with tons of energy and were able to close out UNA in the first set."
Â
Bailee Berringer dished out a team-best 17 assists in the match with 12 coming from
Sydney Chandler. Defensively, Biglow and
Ashton King recorded four blocks each while
Madison Kimes turned in 14 digs to pace the Navy and Gold.
Â
Biglow ranks ninth in school history in solo blocks (39) and 10th in block assists (92) and total blocks (131). Kimes sits six digs shy of moving into sixth in program history in career digs with 694.
Â
"Our defense was definitely the best it's been in a while. My middle blockers really took control and my pin blockers were very dynamic," Redus said. "We had good offense at times and were able to put the ball anywhere we wanted. We made our out of system plays a little more playable and didn't seem to have to scramble too much."
Â
UNA knotted the match at a set each behind a 25-13 victory in the second set and sparked the Purple and Gold to the 3-1 win with 25-8 and 25-11 decisions in the final two sets.
Â
"The second and third sets were really tiring. We got off to slow starts and fought hard to come back, but really just put ourselves in bad spots points-wise. In the fourth set, we seemed to find some of our fire again," Redus said.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 as it host the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Match time is set for 2 p.m. The Lady Choctaws will honor their lone senior, Biglow, prior to the match.
