CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team snapped a nine-game skid with a 3-2 victory at the University of West Georgia on Friday evening. With the win, MC improves to 9-17 on the season and 2-13 in Gulf South Conference action. UWG falls to 4-21 and 1-14 in the league.
Â
The five-set match marked the first of the season for the Navy and Gold this season and the first since Sept. 18, 2015 in a 3-2 setback to Union University at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
Â
Jamila Biglow led MC with 10 kills on the night. The performance ties a season-high set against Lyon College on Sept. 9 and finishes one shy of tying a career-high.
Â
Kayana Mitchell moved into sole possession of seventh in single-season block assists with 59 and 203 career total blocks – which places her two from a tie for fourth at 205 with Courtney Nordyke.
Â
The Lady Choctaws jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the final set to claim a 15-10, match-clinching victory. West Georgia battled back to tie the contest at 7-all, but the Navy and Gold answered with 5-2 run to regain the lead. MC claimed three of the final of the final four points to claim the set.
Â
MC opened the first set on a 9-0 run and rode it to a 25-19 victory. Seven different Lady Choctaws had kills in the set as the squad capitalized on West Georgia errors.
Â
A back and forth contest in the second frame, the two squads exchanged numerous ties and lead changes. The final deadlock came at 19-all, as MC grabbed the lead on a UWG error and claimed a 25-21 win by taking five of the last seven points.
"Apparently, we just really love to play volleyball. We started with a great run by going up 2-0 in the match, but let some of our own errors get in the way," said head coach
Julie Redus. "Our hard work and discipline to close out the match gave us the win and it was well deserved. We need to learn how to get the good points and get the points that are just handed to us, instead of trying to make things out of them. That's where we get stuck in games at times. Tonight we had fire and self-discipline and we were able to run what works best for us and to come away with another conference win."
Â
The Lady Choctaws fell behind early 17-7 in the third set, but rallied back to within 20-17. However the deficit proved too much as the Navy and Gold fell 25-20. In the fourth set, the two teams stood knotted at 13-all, but the Wolves claimed the set, 25-20, behind a 12-4 run to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 as it travels to Livingston, Ala., to face the University of West Alabama. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
