Lady Choctaws' Defense Posts 11 Blocks; Falls Short to Union

CLINTON, Miss. --- In a match that featured the Mississippi College volleyball team record a team total 11 blocks, the Lady Choctaws fell 3-1 in a battle with Union University on Saturday afternoon. MC moves to 8-16, 1-12 in Gulf South Conference play while the Bulldogs improved to 8-15 and 5-7 in the conference.

Seven Lady Choctaws recorded at least a block assist in the match as Kayana Mitchell led all MC players with six. Jamila Biglow, Campbell and Madison Girndt tallied two each. The 11 blocks is three shy of tying a season-high of 14 set at UAH earlier this season.

"Today was another testament to our constant improvement. Of course it's always disheartening coming out with a loss, but what keeps us afloat is our constant changing," said head coach Julie Redus. "Defensively, I feel that this is the most disciplined we have been in a while. Our middles were running the net and we were getting digs that we don't normally get."

Madison Kimes and Ashton King garnered double-digit digs for the Navy and Gold. Kimes paced the team with 15 while King added 10.

Jenna Campbell posted her 10th game in double figures as the League City, Texas, native led the team with 14 kills. The sophomore paced the team with a team-leading .407 attack clip in the four sets. Bailee Berringer added team-best 23 assists.

After Union claimed a 25-18 victory in the first set, MC deadlocked the match in the second set. The Navy and Gold opened the set with a 5-1 lead that forced UU into a timeout. The Bulldogs battled back to force a 12-all tie. MC responded with seven unanswered to take a 19-12 advantage en route to a 25-19 win.

In back and forth battle in the fourth, following a 25-15 setback for the Lady Choctaws in the third set, the two squads found themselves knotted at 13-all. Union broke the tie with a 7-1 spurt to take a 20-14 lead. MC battled back to pull within one point at 22-21, but a kill and two service aces from Hannah Huguley iced the set at 25-21 and clinched the match.

"We are never the same team we have been previously. I challenge out girls to make new or different mistakes, because we need to be constantly adapting and changing," Redus said. "We've implemented a different style of play recently that has helped boost our confidence and our overall fun and love for each other and the game. We shouldn't be ever be counted out."

Union placed three players in double figure kills with Katie O'Malley leading the team with 15. Deja Moorer added 12 with 10 from McKenna Carter. Hughuley added 45 assists to her 11 digs along the two aces. Carter notched a team-best seven blocks.

Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 25 as it hosts West Florida. Match time is slated for 5 p.m.
