Men’s Soccer Blanks Bucs for Eighth Straight Victory

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team knocked off the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University 2-0 on Sunday afternoon, adding another notch in their current winning streak to make it eight victories row for the Choctaws.
 
The win brings MC's record to 9-1-1 on the season, and keeps their record against Gulf South Conference opponents unscathed at 7-0 as they sit atop the conference. The victory also officially clinches a spot in the GSC postseason tournament for the Choctaws.  
 
MC outshot Christian Brothers 13 to 10 in the match, with five of the Choctaws shots being on frame; compared to the Buccaneers four. The Navy and gold took five shots in the first half, and eight in the second half.
 
Bastian Busch and Dinho Zwane led the charge offensively for MC, as they were both responsible for goals scored on the afternoon.
 
Horacio Gutierrez Jr. posted a game-high two assists for the Choctaws, as he had a helping hand in each score. Jacob Farthing accounted for an assist in the match as well.
 
Neither team was able to find their way into the scoring column in the first half, as both defenses held the opposition scoreless through the first 45 minutes. The Choctaws managed to put up five shots, including a shot on Goal from Jorge Delgado in the 12th minute, but were not able to strike pay dirt.
 
The Choctaws were finally able to break through in the 64th minute, when Gutierrez and Farthing combined to helped set up Busch's second score of the season and make it 1-0 in favor of MC.
 
MC would go on to double their lead in the 70th minute, when Gutierrez was able to pounce on a loose ball and set up Zwane for his first score as a Choctaw.  The goal would eventually give way to the 2-0 final.
 
Farthing and Gutierrez both registered a team-high three shots on the afternoon, with one of Farthing's being on frame. Busch, Delgado, Zwane and George Fradenburg all accounted for shots on goal for the Choctaws during the match. Graham Bobo, Connor Johnson and Benaiah Preston all recorded a shot taken during play.

In Goal, Humberto Pelaez was a perfect 4-4 on save opportunities, boosting his season total to 46 on the year. The junior netminder pitched his fifth shutout of the season, while bringing his record to 8-1-1 and improving his goals against average to 0.97 between the posts.
 
MC took two corners in the contest, while holding CBU to zero. The Choctaws were tagged for only one offside infraction, compared to the Buccaneer's five. MC was whistled for five fouls in the contest, while CBU drew 13. Christian Brothers was the recipient of the game's only yellow card in the 60th minute.
 
The Choctaws return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on the Flames of Lee University in a pivotal GSC matchup. Kicoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
