Men’s Soccer Holds on for 2-1 Victory Over Union

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team outlasted the Bulldogs of Union University for a 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon.

"This was an important game for our guys," Head Coach Kevin Johns said. "Having almost a two-week layoff, I was worried we might come out and look a little rusty out of the gate. We had a good first half though, and ultimately that's what propelled us to this win."

The win marks the 7th straight victory for the Choctaws, improving their overall record to 8-1-1 on the year. The victory also improves MC's conference record to an unblemished 6-0, keeping them atop the Gulf South Conference standings.

MC was outshot by Union 16 to 12 in the match, with the Choctaws accounting for 5 shots on goal, compared to the Bulldogs six.

Horacio Gutierrez Jr. and Jacob Farthing led the charge offensively for MC, each recording a goal on the afternoon.

In the assist stat column, Graham Bobo, Dinho Zwane and Elliot Rimmer all helped set up scores for the Choctaws.

The Choctaws came out swinging in the first half, as they accounted for eight shots and five shots on goal. Gutierrez's broke the scoreless tie in the 26th minute, when he booted in his fourth goal of the season. Bobo was credited for his second assist of the year on the score.

Two minutes Later, Farthing found the back of the net for his 6th goal of the 2016 campaign (28:57). Zwane delivered a well-struck ball via a corner kick that found Rimmer's head, and then Farthing's foot for the double assist. It was Zwane's fourth and Rimmer's first assist of the season.

Union accounted for the only goal in the second half, when Paul Langford knocked in a goal in the 66th minute that went just past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Humberto Pelaez. The Choctaw defense would hold steady for the remaining 24 minutes, giving way to the 2-1 final score.

Jorge Delgado and Victor Marinho both took a team-high three shots on the afternoon, with Delgado accounting for a shot on goal. Gutierrez and Farthing both took two shots, with two of Gutierrez's being on frame and one of Farthing's. Zwane accounted for a shot on goal, and Connor Johnson also took a shot for MC in the contest.

In Goal, Pelaez grabbed five saves on six opportunities. The junior goalie improved to 7-1-1 with the win.

The Choctaws took five corner kicks in the game, to the Bulldogs six. Union committed five offside infractions, to MC's two. Union was whistled for 14 fouls, while MC was tagged for 11. Both teams were the recipients of two yellow cards apiece.

The Choctaws return to action on Sunday, when they host Christian Brothers in their last GSC home contest of the season.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
