Men's Basketball Preview: Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will remain on the road Monday night when they face Lee University at the Paul Dana Walker Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm (Central).

This will be just the third all-time meeting between the two schools with both teams tallying a win. Both meetings came last season with the home teams getting both wins.

Last year's meeting in Cleveland saw the Flames score 55 second-half points to pick up a 92-85 victory. Four Choctaws scored in double-figures, led by Tory Rice with 23, followed by Tristan Moore with 21 points. MC went 31-of-43 (72%) from the free throw line, while Lee was 11-of-21 (52%) from long range. Stedmon Ford led the Flames with 29 points, while Chase Cullen had 21 with six rebounds and four steals.

The Choctaws fell to hot-shooting Shorter on Saturday afternoon, 87-80. The Hawks went 18-of-27 (67%) from the field in the second half to grab the victory. Jonathan McGee tied a school record with eight made three-pointers in the game, scoring a team-high 29 points.

MC head coach Don Lofton comes into his 12th season with his 200th career victory in sight. Lofton, who has been a part of the program for more than 30 years, has won 193 games as the head man and coached his 300th career game against UWF.

The Choctaw offense has been much more effective on the road this season, averaging 79.3 points per game away from home and just 62.0 points per game in A.E. Wood Coliseum. They are shooting just 37% from the floor at home and 51% from the field on the road.

Rice (14.4 ppg / 11.2 rpg) is MC's leading scorer and rebounder on the season, shooting 58% from the floor. The Starkville native has been held in single-figure scoring over the last two games, putting up nine in losses to North Alabama and Shorter. He is averaging 12.5 rebounds per game in that span, including pulling down eight offensive rebounds against UNA.

McGee (12.6 ppg) has been MC's best scorer over the past five games, averaging 19.0 points per game and shooting 45% from the three-point line. The Raymond native and transfer from Harding University is also shooting 50% from the floor and is 16-of-18 from the free throw line in that span.

Tristan Moore (13.8 ppg) leads the Choctaws with 49 assists and 16 steals on the year. The Senatobia native is MC's all-time leader in assists (4.4) and steals (1.2) per game over his two-year career.

The Flames are led by 11th-year head coach Tommy Brown, who is creeping up on his 400th career victory in 19 seasons. Lee has lost five straight games and nine of their last 10, but four of those defeats have been by five points or less.

On Saturday afternoon, the Flames lost to GSC-leading Delta State, 72-68, in Cleveland. Chase Cullen led the way for Lee, scoring 23 points with eight rebounds off the bench. The Statesmen were led by All-American Devin Schmidt with 31 points.

The Flames are holding opponents to just 43% shooting this season, but they are averaging 17.1 turnovers per game, losing the turnover margin by 5.0 per contest. Lee is shooting 47% from the floor but just 63% from the foul ine.

Keevin Tyus (14.9 ppg / 7.2 rpg) is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, shooting 62% from the floor. Cullen (12.1 ppg) missed the first six games of the season, but got things going with 23 on Saturday. He went 10-of-15 from the floor in the loss to DSU. Jervon Johnson (8.4 ppg) is the team's leading three-point threat, going 26-of-75 (35%) from long range.
