CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team clinched its first Gulf South Conference victory with a 3-1 decision at the University of West Georgia on Friday evening at The Coliseum on the UWG campus.
"I'm proud of how the team played tonight. They played with consistent energy and focus and kept applying the pressure on West Georgia. It was also a fun, tactical match tonight," said head coach
Peter Cosmiano. "They had some very good attackers that we had to focus our block and our back row defense on in the contest. We also had some key substitutions that immediately made good touches on the ball which helped us keep the momentum."
Jenna Campbell and
Shelby Grace Mays paced the Lady Choctaws (2-11, 1-4 GSC) with eight kills each in the match. Campbell posted a .316 attack percentage while Mays hit .167 for the four games.
Madison Frazier finished third on the team with seven kills in the match.
As a team, MC posted 41 kills on the night for a season-high attack percentage of .243.
Bailee Berringer and
Sydney Chandler combined for 32 assists in the four sets. Berringer led the duo with 20 assists while Chandler added 12. It marked the fifth straight contest in double figures for Berringer and the fourth straight for Chandler, who moved to ninth in program history in career assists with 626. The Blue and Gold combined for 38 as a team.
Alex Hackett and Mays tied for the team-lead with nine digs each on the defensive end for the Lady Choctaws while
Kayana Mitchell recorded four blocks in the match, including a pair of block solos.
MC jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first two games. The Lady Choctaws opened the contest with a 25-20 victory in the first game and followed with a commanding 25-18 win in the second game. UWG battled back in the third game, 25-15.
Knotted at 19-all in the fourth game, the Blue and Gold garnered six of the final eight points scored to slam the door on the match with a 25-21 win and secure the conference win.
Helen Menchinger led UWG with 20 kills on the night while Kelcie Zimmer dished out 34 assists. Casey Roethler gathered a team-best 14 digs.
Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Sept.29 against the University of West Florida. Match time is slated for 6 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
