Choctaws Fall Twice to North Alabama in Home Finale

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team finished out their home schedule with two losses in a doubleheader to North Alabama on Monday afternoon at Frierson Field.

For head coach Brian Owens, it was his final home games as the skipper after announcing his resignation last Monday. Owens finished his career with a 122-81 (.601) record at Frierson Field in nine years.

The Choctaws (12-30, 4-25 GSC) started the opening game down 3-0, but freshman Kyle Smith started the comeback with and RBI groundout to score junior Toler Robinson in the third inning.

In the fifth inning, MC appeared poised to tie the game or take the lead when they loaded the bases with one out and Smith drove in Robinson with an infield single.

The Lions (26-14, 14-12 GSC) would get out of the inning without allowing the tying run and would go on to score 10 straight to end the game and win, 13-2.

Senior Hunter Hall led the MC offense with two hits, while Smith had a team-high two RBI. Freshman Jake Fraze (2-6) went 6.0 innings and scattered 12 hits and five earned runs.

Riley Sanderson (4-5) tossed a complete game for UNA. The offense pounded out 19 hits, led by Dylan Calhoun with four hits and three RBI.

In the second game, UNA jumped out to a big early lead with nine runs in the second inning and four runs in the third. They tallied 18 hits, giving them 37 in the doubleheader.

Senior Marty Stringfellow and junior Logan Ferrell had hits for MC. Senior Andy Olmsted tossed a perfect seventh inning in relief in his final outing at Frierson Field.

Kyle Conkle (3-4) allowed just two hits in 7.0 innings, giving the Lions their third complete game effort of the season.

The Choctaws will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Jackson to face Millsaps at 6:00 p.m.
