PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College softball team will head to the "Sunshine State" this weekend for a three-game series with West Florida, beginning with a single game on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the UWF Softball Complex.
SERIES RECORDÂ Â Â
The Lady Choctaws (20-12, 11-9 GSC) and the Argonauts (11-24, 5-15 GSC) have met nine previous times with UWF holding a 9-0 edge in the series. They have not played since the 1997 season when MC traveled to Pensacola, falling 16-4.
NOTES ON THE LADY CHOCTAWSÂ Â Â
Brooke O'Hair is in her 9th season as the head coach at Misisissippi College, earning her 200th career win last season. O'Hair opened her successful stint with 38-10 record and an American Southwest Conference East Division championship. The Lady Choctaws advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament that season and also qualified for the postseason tournament in 2010 and 2011.
The Lady Choctaws are coming off a dominating doubleheader sweep of Belhaven on Wednesday night, holding the Blazers to just one run in 14 innings. Junior
Carlie Sargent tossed her 2nd complete game shutout of the season, holding BU to just two hits in a 2-0 win. In the second game, MC used a 5-run 2nd inning to take a 7-1 victory.
Sophomore
Megan Everett (.391) leads the team in hits (43) and RBI (30). She is second on the squad with 18 runs scored and has not made an error in 36 chances in left field this season.
Senior
Shay Mickens (.365) has been a terror for opponents on the basepaths since she stepped on campus. The Odenville, Ala. native ranks 3rd in school history with 66 stolen bases after swiping an MC-record 44 bags in 2014. She has currently reached base in 11 straight games coming into the series with UWF.
Senior
Brooke Smitherman (.393) leads the team in batting average and has been walked 30 times to tally a .551 on-base percentage. Junior
Ashley Subervielle (.306) leads the team with 11 doubles, while senior
Macey Lee (.244) and Subervielle are tied with Everett with 18 runs scored. Mickens leads the team with 30.
Pitching and defense have been the key to MC's success thisi season as they are 18-5 when they allow five or fewer runs this season. They are just 2-7 when their opponents score six or more in a game.
Sargent (14-5, 2.34 ERA) is coming off her dominant performance against Belhaven on Wednesday that saw her take a perfect game into the 5th inning. She allowed only two bloop singles in the shutout.
Senior
Lacie Patterson (4-5, 3.40 ERA) has been impressive in her last two outings in the circle. The Southaven native has allowed just three hits and no runs over her last 7.0 innings pitched.

NOTES ON THE ARGONAUTSThe Argonauts are led by first-year head coach Melissa Paul, who joined the staff as an assistant in the 2014 season. She came to UWF after helping lead Missouri to three straight College World Series appearances as an assistant.
The Argos opened the season with just one win in their first 14 games, but they got things going with a series win against Christian Brothers at the end of February. Last weekend, they were swept in a three-game home series against, but two of the three games were decided by one run.
UWF ranks last in the Gulf South Conference with a .251 batting average, scoring just 3.3 runs per game this season. Meghan Toney (.333) and Emily Pettigrew (.325) are the only players hitting over .300 this season.
Jenna Belser (.281) leads the team with seven doubles and is tied with Kaylen Rowell (.270) with a team-high 15 RBI. Rowell leads the team with three of the team's nine home runs.
Kalyn Chapman (4-7, 3.86 ERA) leads the team with 54 strikeouts in a team-high 65.1 innings pitched. Becca Taylor (5-5, 2.27 ERA) and Rebecca Hein (1-6, 3.60 ERA) have also made starts in the circle.
