CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team opened Sunday by celebrating "Senior Day", but North Alabama came away with a 7-4 victory at Frierson Field.
The Choctaws (12-28, 4-23 GSC) honored their seven seniors prior to the game, and lefty
Brooks Fortenberry took the mound for his final home start. The Magee native gave up 15 hits, but when he left the game, MC was trailing just 7-4.
The Lions (24-14, 12-12 GSC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, thanks in large part to two home runs by Dylan Boston, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI in the contest.
In the fourth inning, MC cut into the advantage when junior
Toler Robinson tripled and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by junior
Garrett Odom.
After UNA pushed the lead out to 7-1, junior
Logan Ferrell hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center field that drove in sophomore
Hunter Bolin and freshman
Colton Johnson.
With the lead cut down to 7-4, UNA starting pitcher Brantley Claunch closed the door retiring nine of the final 10 hitters for MC with the only baserunner coming on a two-out single from Ferrell. Claunch (5-4) struck out five over the complete game effort.
Senior
Andy Olmsted had another stellar performance on the mound for the Choctaws, entering the game with runners on first and second with no outs in the eighth, but the Brandon native stranded them there and pitched a scorless ninth to keep MC in the game.
Olmsted has now had scoreless outings in five of his last six appearances and in 8-of-15 outings on the year.
Ferrell, Robinson and junior
Caleb Upton each had two hits to lead the Choctaw offense.
The Choctaws and the Lions will be back in action on Monday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Frierson Field.
