Fast Start Not Enough as Choctaws Drop Series to Delta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team put up four first-inning runs, but Delta State roared back with a nine-run second and won the series with a 17-10 victory on Sunday afternoon at Frierson Field.

The Choctaws (12-27, 4-22 GSC) got off to a fast start with a four-spot in the opening inning, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore Hunter Bolin, who went 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored in the series.

The Statesmen (17-13, 12-8 GSC), however, would come storming back, scoring nine runs in the second inning to grab a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Ben Pickard's grand slam was the big blow that gave DSU the advantage.

After Delta State pushed the lead out to 16-4, the Choctaws would keep fighting as freshman Colton Johnson and junior Caleb Upton each had RBI in the sixth to cut the lead down to 16-6.

The Statesmen would add another run in the eighth, but junior Logan Ferrell doubled home three runs with two outs in the frame to extend the game into the ninth with the score 17-10.

Ferrell finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI, while Upton and juniors Toler Robinson and Garrett Odom also had multi-hit games. Odom came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

Junior Taylor Olsen (2-5) took the loss for MC, giving up four hits and eight earned runs over 1.1 innings. Junior Hunter Floyd pitched a perfect ninth inning out of the bullpen for MC.

The Choctaws will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Hattiesburg to play William Carey at 6:00 p.m.
