SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Delta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- A rivalry will be renewed this weekend at the MC Softball Complex when the Mississippi College softball team hosts Delta State University for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Prior to the first game of the series, MC's Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and former Lady Choctaw Susan Musselwhite will throw out the first pitch.

SERIES RECORD
The Lady Choctaws (22-15, 12-11 GSC) and the Lady Statesmen (19-16, 6-11 GSC) have met 65 previous times with MC holding a 36-29 edge in the series. DSU has won six straight, but the teams have not played since 1996.

NOTES ON THE LADY CHOCTAWS
Brooke O'Hair is in her 9th season as the head coach at Misisissippi College, earning her 200th career win last season. O'Hair opened her successful stint with 38-10 record and an American Southwest Conference East Division championship. The Lady Choctaws advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament that season and also qualified for the postseason tournament in 2010 and 2011.

The Lady Choctaws are coming of a difficult doubleheader split at Division I Jackson State on Wednesday night. Senior Brooke Smitherman drove in the game-winning run with a double in the 7th inning of a 5-4 win in Game 1. In the second game, MC led 5-1 going to the 7th inning, but JSU scored five to win the game.

The MC offense has been the key to their success this season as they are 13-1 in games when they score six or more runs. They have done that just twice in the last 10 games, going 5-5 over that stretch.

Sophomore Megan Everett (.380) leads the team in average and RBI (33) and is tied for the team-lead with senior Shay Mickens (.368) with 49 hits. Mickens leads the team with 34 runs scored and 24 stolen bases in 24 attempts.

Brooke Smitherman (.367) has been walked 35 times this season, giving her an even 150 free passes over her career. The next highest total is 75 by Morgan Harpole (2008-11). Seniors Tori Bankston (.298) and Karla Beth Hux (.358) are tied for the team-lead with three home runs apiece.

Junior Ashley Subervielle (.310) leads the team with 12 doubles this season, a mark that is tied for 8th in a single season in school history. She is also second on the squad with 20 runs scored. Macey Lee (.252), who holds the doubles record with 19 in 2012, is second on the team with 16 stolen bases.

The Lady Choctaws' pitching staff had gone 11 straight games without allowing more than five runs before Jackson State put up six on Wednesday night. In that span, they posted two shutouts and held opponents to two or fewer runs three times.

Junior Carlie Sargent (15-7, 2.35 ERA) racked up her 100th strikeout of the season on Wednesday against JSU. She leads the team with 122.1 innings pitched, nine complete game and two shutouts. Senior Lacie Patterson (4-5, 3.26 ERA) has allowed just three earned runs over her last four appearances, totaling 16.1 innings pitched.

After a 9-1 start to the season, the Lady Statesmen went through a 9-game losing streak from February 15-March 16. They have found another hot streak as of late, winning five straight games, including sweeping doubleheaders against Christian Brothers and Montevallo earlier this week.

DSU ranks 3rd in the GSC with a team batting average of .324, led by Amber Adcock (.477) and Kassidy Tally (.421), who are both well over .400 on the season. Tally leads the team with 32 runs scored and 37 stolen bases, while Adcock has a team-high five home runs and 30 RBI.
