Choctaws Suffer Tough-Luck Loss in Series Final to West Georgia

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team pounded out eight hits, but they could not scratch a run across in a 5-0 loss to the University of West Georgia on Sunday afternoon at Frierson Field.

After the Wolves (14-5, 8-4 GSC) swept the doubleheader on Saturday, the picked up a sweep of the Choctaws (7-11, 2-9 GSC) with the win on Sunday.

Junior Kyle Cumlander (1-4) took the loss for MC, despite having his best outing of the season. He coasted through the first four innings, not allowing a base-runner to reach third base.

In the fifth, UWG loaded the bases with one out on a walk and back-to-back seeing-eye singles. After Cumlander struck out Troy Brown to get two outs, Sumner McWhorter hit a pop-up to left field, appearing to end the inning.

The fly ball was dropped, and the Wolves capitalized with five runs in the inning, chasing Cumlander, who allowed seven hits and five unearned runs over 4.2 innings.

Junior Wesley Wilkinson pitched well in relief of Cumlander, allowing just one hit over 3.1 innings pitched. Junior Tanner Densford closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Brandon Goldsmith was the story for West Georgia, pitching a complete game shutout, scattering nine hits with three strikeouts.

Junior Colton Caver, who is now hitting .427 on the season, led the MC offense with three hits on the day. Freshman Kyle Smith came off the bench to go 2-for-2 and throw out a runner at the plate from center field.

Tyler Hutch led the UWG offense with threee hits and a run scored, while Garrett Hayes drove in a team-high two runs.

The Choctaws are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at home against LeMoyne-Owen at 2:00 p.m. With inclement weather expected in the area all week, check @ChoctawSports on Twitter for updates.
