CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team saw several run-scoring opportunities come up empty in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the University of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at Frierson Field.
The Choctaws (7-10, 2-8 GSC) dropped the first game in extra innings by a score of 6-4, while the Wolves (13-5, 7-4 GSC) had a comeback win the second game, 5-4.
In the opener, senior
Brooks Fortenberry had another outstanding outing, going 8.0 innings with four strikeouts. He is now 8th in school history with 180.0 career innings pitched, and 7th in school history with 159 career strikeouts.
The Choctaws got on the board in the first inning, as senior
Akiko Thompson led off with a single and junior
Caleb Upton drove him in with a two-out single up the middle. Upton finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI in the game.
After the Wolves scored four unanswered runs, junior
Toler Robinson hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-3.
Junior
Colton Caver drove in the game-tying run in the seventh inning as he grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Thompson for the second time.
As the game went into the 10th inning, the Wolves broke the tie with a two-run double from Garrett Hayes, who finished 2-for-5 with three RBI.
The Choctaws put runners on first and second with one out in their half of the 10th, but they would leave two of their nine base-runners on in the game.
In the second game, the Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Caver would give the Choctaws the lead in the third inning with a two-run single to score freshman
Colton Johnson and Thompson.
Caver finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Johnson was 3-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.
Senior
Marty Stringfellow tripled home a run in the fourth inning, and Johnson gave the Choctaws a 4-1 lead with an RBI single.
UWG tied the game up in the fifth inning with three two-out hits to make the score 4-4.
The Choctaws appeared poised to take a lead in the sixth inning with runners on first and third with one out, but the Wolves got a bunt pop-out and a strikeout to end the inning.
The game was still tied in the seventh inning, but the Wolves would break the tie again as Artemis Kadkhodaian drove home Hayes with an RBI single. The Choctaws would go down in order in the seventh.
Freshman
Jake Fraze had an impressive outing on the mound for the Choctaws, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
The Choctaws and Wolves will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game at 12:00 p.m.
