BASEBALL PREVIEW: West Georgia

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team will play their third straight home Gulf South Conference series this weekend when they host the University of West Georgia, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. The teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m at Frierson Field.

The Choctaws are led by head coach Brian Owens, who earned his 200th career victory on February 19th with a 3-2 win over Union University in 16 innings. The Wolves are led by 6th-year head coach Skip Fite.

MC opened the season with six straight wins, giving them their best start since the 2003 season. Since then, however, they have gone just 1-8 over their last nine contests. They had the final game of the series with Alabama Huntsville canceled due to rain and dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at Spring Hill.

Senior Brooks Fortenberry leads the pitching staff with a 2-0 record and a 3.12 ERA. The Magee native allowed just two runs over 6.0 innings in his last outing against Alabama Huntsville, but the Chargers exploded for seven runs in the 7th and pulled away for the 15-9 win.

Freshman left-hander Jake Fraze (2-1, 4.36 ERA) ranks second on the team in innings pitched (20.2) this season. The Plano, Texas native already has eight pick-offs, which is the top mark in the country.

Sophomore Hunter Bolin (.413) is the team's leading hitter, and the Starkville native also leads the team with seven stolen bases. He ranks second on the team with 19 hits, three doubles and 12 RBI.

Junior Colton Caver (.403) has posted a team-high 25 hits and five doubles, also tying for the team-lead with 16 runs scored. Senior Marty Stringfellow and junior Garrett Odom each lead the team with two home runs, while senior Akiko Thompson has a team-high two triples.

The Wolves are coming off an impressive three-game sweep of Lee University in Carrollton last weekend. They held the Flames to just seven total runs in the series.

Jamie Sexton (4-1, 2.06 ERA) and Matthew Norton (2-2, 2.27 ERA) have been the main-stays at the top of the rotation for UWG. Sexton leads the team with 29 strikeouts, and opponents are batting just .168 against him.

Tyler Hutch (.385) is the team's leading hitter this season, also pacing the team with 20 hits and 23 runs scored, while being hit by a pitch 11 times. Garrett Hayes (.377) is second on the team in hitting and leads the way with 17 RBI. Peyton Mann (.309) leads the team with seven doubles and ranks third on the team with 14 RBI.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
This will be the third 3-game series played between these two teams with MC holding a 4-2 edge in the overall series. They met in Clinton back in 1992 with MC picking up wins in the opener (9-6) and the finale (4-3).
