CLINTON, Miss. --- In a wild game that 17 pitchers used and a nine-run lead evaporate, it was Belhaven University that pulled out a 15-13 win over the Mississippi College baseball team on Wednesday night at Frierson Field.
The Blazers (24-12) appeared to be on their way to an easy victory as they staked claim to a 10-1 after the top of the fourth inning, helped in large part by two long home runs by Adam Kowalczyk, who went 4-for-6 on the night with five RBI and three runs scored.
The Choctaws (9-18) would erase the lead quickly in their half of the fourth, as they put together seven straight two-out hits, scoring eight runs to cut the lead to 10-9. Junior
Hunter Hall drove in two runs with a double to highlight the comeback bid.
After Belhaven scored two more runs in the fifth, junior
Garrett Odom would send a moon-shot over the left field field fence to tie the score at 12-12 as junior
Colton Caver and senior
Marty Stringfellow came home to score on the round-tripper.
With both offenses clicking through five innings, a strange thing happened, beginning with the sixth inning. Both pitching staffs were able to put together scoreless innings, as junior
Taylor Olsen led the way for MC, tossing three hitless frames with two strikeouts.
The game would remain tied, 12-12, until the ninth inning when the Blazers cracked the scoreboard again with three runs, two of which were unearned.
The Choctaws would look to make yet another comeback as sophomore
Hunter Bolin drove in Hall with a two-out single, but the Blazers held off the charge to earn the victory.
Odom led the MC offense, going 2-for-2 with the home run, four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Colton Johnson had a team-high three hits, while Hall scored a team-high three runs.
David Hill (1-1) picked up the win for Belhaven, pitching a scoreless 8th inning, while Zach Osha earned his seventh save of the year. Junior
Tyler Scholl took the loss for MC, allowing two hits and just one earned run in the 9th.
The Choctaws will be back in action this weekend as they host Shorter University for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
